Berta Exotic shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Berta , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
A typical day in my life begins with a moment of gratitude and meditation. I start each morning by thanking God for waking me up, which centers me and sets a positive tone for the day. Prayer plays a significant role in my routine, providing focus and clarity as I move through my tasks. Prioritizing my health has become increasingly important, so I dedicate 30 minutes each morning to cardio exercise. This not only enhances my physical well-being but also ensures I’m fully present and energized for my business commitments.
After my workout, I dive into checking emails and managing communications. Staying connected with clients is essential, and I enjoy collaborating with them to bring their visions to life. Throughout the day, I engage in creative processes like customizing colors and designing wigs, blending artistry and skill.
I also dedicate time to content creation, showcasing my work and sharing insights with my audience. Scheduling and coordinating with clients and models is a crucial part of my routine, ensuring that content creation aligns seamlessly with my marketing strategy.
By balancing creativity, client interaction, and a commitment to personal health, I manage to both nurture my passion for wig making and sustain my business’s growth.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Berta, and I am the owner and co-founder of Exotic Lox, a brand deeply rooted in my passion for wig making—a passion ignited by my grandmother, who struggled with alopecia. With over 20 years in the hair industry and the unique perspective of being a registered nurse, I specialize in crafting wigs for individuals from all walks of life, especially those experiencing medical-related hair loss due to treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. At Exotic Lox, we value giving back, which is why we donate two wigs to “Wigs for Kids” each year, using a percentage of our sales.
We focus on offering a personalized, white-glove experience, with wigs tailored to each client’s head size and desired color. This level of customization distinguishes us from generic online retailers. For those experiencing medical hair loss, we accept insurance if it covers cranial prosthetics, which could allow you to obtain a wig without having to pay out of pocket. Consultations are available to walk clients through this process.
Originally based in a Denver storefront, I’ve transitioned to an online-based model, which allows me to travel between Denver and Miami, collaborating with clients, celebrity stylists, and high-end clientele. Our wigs are crafted from premium real human hair sourced from Europe, ensuring quality and a natural look. Designed for comfort and ease, our wigs eliminate the need to damage natural hair.
I’ve also launched an organic hair growth oil line made with natural ingredients like rosemary oil to support healthy hair growth. Additionally, I’m thrilled to announce my upcoming show in Miami, which will premiere on major television platforms this fall and winter, where I’ll be proudly representing Denver. More than just a business, Exotic Lox is about empowerment, confidence, and celebrating personalized Brand
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
One of my earliest memories of feeling powerful was when I first realized the impact of my creativity on others. As a child, I remember creating something—whether it was a story, a piece of art, or a small craft project—and sharing it with family or friends. The way their faces lit up, their words of encouragement, and the sense of accomplishment I felt, knowing I had brought joy or sparked imagination in others, made me feel a unique sense of power. This realization laid the foundation for my passion, which eventually evolved into wig making. Through this craft, I harness the power to transform lives and help individuals from all walks of life feel confident and self-assured. Bringing joy and boosting self-esteem by crafting personalized wigs—each one a testament to the potential of creativity—continues to be a profound source of empowerment for me.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has taught me lessons that success never could. It revealed my inner strength and resilience, showing me that I’m capable of enduring and overcoming challenges. While success brings validation and joy, enduring tough times has deepened my empathy and understanding, allowing me to connect more profoundly with others facing difficulties. It has prompted me to look inward, reassessing my values and priorities, which has led to significant personal growth. Suffering has also instilled a sense of humility in me, constantly reminding me of my humanity and the unpredictable nature of life. These experiences have enriched my life, providing a depth of character and perspective that success alone could not offer.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is a reflection of the real me, but it’s often a curated glimpse rather than the full picture. I strive to be genuine and authentic, but like many people, I naturally emphasize certain aspects of my personality in different settings. In public, I may be more focused, driven, and upbeat, showcasing my professional side, while in private, I allow myself to be more vulnerable and introspective. Both versions are true to who I am, yet the private moments reveal nuances and complexities that might not always be visible to the outside world. Balancing these aspects helps me maintain authenticity while adapting to different environments and relationships.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope the story people tell about me when I’m gone is one of compassion, creativity, and empowerment. I would like to be remembered as someone who used my talents and skills to make a positive impact on others, helping them feel confident and valued. I hope people recall my genuine care for others and my efforts to foster connections that uplifted and inspired them. Additionally, I want to be seen as someone who embraced challenges with resilience and grace, always striving to learn and grow. Ultimately, I hope my legacy is one that encouraged others to pursue their passions, embrace their uniqueness, and live with kindness and purpose.
