Story & Lesson Highlights with BlackLiq of Richmond, Virginia

We recently had the chance to connect with BlackLiq and have shared our conversation below.

Hi BlackLiq, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Water, as little phone or social media as possible, and exercise.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I can’t say it any better than how its been said, if it seems longwinded its because this is what good PR people do when your story is worth telling and not just selling. Otherwise just got to BlackLiq.com and watch the videos, listen to the music, and lurk on my social media. Anyway……

Richmond, VA MC BlackLiq is unafraid to stare point-blank into the deepest, most reflective sectors of the abyss while holding his head high and rearranging his reflection into whatever form the future demands – he remains true to self while never allowing that allegiance to stunt growth.

A long-time independent force, BlackLiq has filled the roles of radio host on WRIR 97.3FM & WDCE 90.1FM, promoter, journalist, author, mentor, teacher in public and private schools as well as juvenile detention facilities and universities, TEDtalk speaker, and more. During the Civil Unrest of 2020 he was interviewed and quoted by Washington Post, NPR, and TIME Magazine, and wrote an editorial for University Of Richmond’s The Collegian as well as University of Illinois Press Journal of American Folk Lore (JAF).

Respected as an MC throughout the underground and above, he has appeared on indie rap juggernaut Atmosphere’s album, “WORD?” and has released two albums on Strange Famous Records with producer Mopes, “Time Is The Price” and “Choice Is A Chance” as well as “What Will It Take” with producer Ohbliv and “THE LIE” on Man Bites Dog Records. He is also the vocalist of his punk band, Armagideon Time on Anti-Corp Music. His most recent release with producer Dub Sonata, “Much Given, Much Tested” features guests Slug of Atmosphere, Napoleon Da Legend, Nickelus F, Noah-O, and Michael Alan Alien.

BlackLiq places all facets on display to tell his story, one rhyme at a time.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
The world has never told me who I am, it has only told me what I am capable of by reminding me time after time that I must be the one who believes in me more than anyone else possibly can. Otherwise how else am going to do the things that nobody has?

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
The first time I heard Ghostface Killah’s album “Supreme Clientele” I quit rhyming for 15 minutes. It was and still is just that good. Then I remembered that there are people who he won’t be able to reach that may be waiting for me, and that through this art I have the chance to make someone feel the way his album made me feel.

And then I got back to work and I haven’t stopped since.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, I actually am like this, just like my song “Success” says. I’ve made it a point to tell people my story through my music and pretty much everything else. I had forgotten that persona was a expected thing until I met someone and they said “You’re just like you are on the radio. This is crazy!”

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If immortality were real, what would you build?
Who says it isn’t? Energy never dies, it only transforms.

That’s what art is.

That said, having time isn’t justification to waste time, no matter how much of it you may have.

With mine I am building me.
