We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dylan Demery. Check out our conversation below.
Dylan, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
My best friend’s mother (who was also like another mother to me) passed away recently. During her mother’s estate sale, we found a bunch of her mother’s moo moos. I took all the ones I could find and my friend looked a little confused. “What are you going to do with all those moo moos?” I said I planned to have a Moo Moos & Mimosas Pool Party at my house. My friend lives out of state and wouldn’t be able to attend, but we did have that party in celebration of her mother’s birthday. We all donned her moo moos or wore our own and had a great time with wonderful pictures that I later shared with my best friend. So much laughter!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Dylan Demery and I am the co-founder and owner a She’s Fly, a fly fishing company with a particular focus on products and services by and for women.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I’ve been holding onto the life that I shared with my late husband for nearly 16 years. I kept that attachment because I felt like I needed to honor it, remember it, and carry it with me. Then about 5 months ago while I was meditating, an epiphany struck me – that life no longer served me. I need to release it and live MY life, for me, because I’m still here. It sounds so simple but I feel like I needed that cocoon so I could heal, and now I’m ready to let that part of myself go so that I can live fully into the life I have that’s happening right now. It’s been one of the most freeing experiences I’ve had.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
I got laid off for the third time in three years from my tech job. Instead of jumping right back into the fray, I decided to take some time off and change my career path. So now I’m looking into ways to diversify my income stream and probably create a couple other businesses. Big change from the corporate life!
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The fly fishing industry seems to think that they can always do things the way they have – they haven’t really modernized and are trying to do that now. Their demographic (old white men) are dying off and it’s time to invite younger people into the sport. I don’t think they’ve figured out how to do that effectively yet but there are pockets all over the industry that are making big steps in that direction.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Work that I don’t enjoy.
