We’re looking forward to introducing you to J.K. Halvorson . Check out our conversation below.
J.K., we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
When I’m feeling too overwhelmed with the demands of life I take myself golfing. It is proven way for me to become present, centered, grounded.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Colorado native musician. I grew up along the northern front range. I spent my early and adolescent years in Longmont, Loveland and Fort Collins mostly. In high school I began playing guitar. Music was already becoming more and more important to me in those years leading up to picking up my first guitar. For the last 4 years or so I have been performing as a solo musician at different establishments throughout Central and Northern Colorado. I spend time each week polishing my beloved craft. I am always trying to learn and practice new ways of becoming the most authentic performing artist I can be.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
For the majority of my adulthood I’ve had different ways of indulging in escapism. Ridding myself of all these behaviors is certainly an ongoing process. I try my best to see how it did serve a purpose at the time and to be patient with myself in knowing it’s difficult to release.
Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
Lately I’ve been feeling really nostalgic. In those moments I’d say what I’m longing for is a now buried sense of overall wonder. I’m missing a sense of naivety and optimism.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. When you book J.K. Halvorson for a performance the individual that shows up is the same J.K. (albeit more professional) that you could find out playing pool on another night. My interactions with the crowd during a performance are authentic. If I had to do otherwise I would just go back to only playing music without the gigs.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
I’ve begun writing poetry. I feel it to be a different discipline than song writing. It’s something I’m compelled to do in the hopes of one day publishing my works. I give myself the conservative estimate of 7-10 years. It’s a craft that has intrigued and intimidated me for years.
