Joey Borrero shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Joey, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is a normal day like for you right now?
I start my mornings with a 5.5-mile run to get the blood flowing and set the tone for the day. After refueling and resting until early afternoon, I head to the gym for my main training session alongside Nate Jones and my uncle, former world title challenger “Fast” Fres Oquendo. 💪🏾🥊🇵🇷 come back home shower eat rest and repeat Sundays and tuesdays I go to church so those days change a little bit
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Joey Borrero, also known in the ring as El Hijo de Dios. I’m a professional boxer with Puerto Rican roots, currently holding a record of 12-1 with 9 knockouts. I was raised by my grandparents in Cupey Alto, Puerto Rico, and have been deeply inspired by my family’s legacy in the sport—especially my uncle, the legendary Félix “Tito” Trinidad.
What sets me apart is that I’m not just fighting for titles—I’m fighting to glorify God’s name, honor my family, and inspire the next generation. My brand is built on faith, discipline, and the belief that with hard work and purpose, anything is possible. Right now, I’m training harder than ever, focused on climbing the ranks and carving out my own legacy in boxing, while staying grounded in my mission to represent my people and my faith with pride.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My grandfather and grandmother saw something in me long before I could see it in myself. They raised me, believed in me, and poured everything they had into giving me a better future. They taught me how to love, how to carry myself with respect, and most importantly, that no matter how little you have, you should always show love to others and work hard for your dreams. Their faith in me is the foundation of everything I am today—in and out of the ring.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me what success never could—that God allows you to walk through the fire not to destroy you, but to mold you. At one point, I lost my family because of poor choices—chasing women and smoking weed instead of being responsible and accountable to the woman who loved me. That woman is now my wife and the mother of our two beautiful children. Through that pain, God changed me, humbled me, and restored not just my life, but my family. Suffering taught me gratitude, growth, and the power of redemption.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes—the public version of me is the real me. I don’t believe in putting on a fake persona because, eventually, people see through it. I’d rather be genuine from the start. If someone doesn’t like me for who I truly am, that’s okay—but if they do, they’ll appreciate me for being authentic. At the end of the day, I’d rather be real than perfect.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that Joey Borrero was a man of God who proved you don’t need to sell drugs, follow the crowd, or compromise your values to make it in life. I want my story to show that faith, hard work, and staying true to yourself can take you far. If my journey inspires even one person to believe that they can rise up and succeed while walking with God, then I’ve done something worth remembering.
