We recently had the chance to connect with Justas Marcink and have shared our conversation below.
Justas, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I am currently wandering the path that I have chosen. As a creative, my path has been pretty clear, but everything that happens along the way and the things you have to navigate aren’t always clear. It feels like I’m exploring a path.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Justas Marcink, and I’m an artist in Denver, Colorado. I work primarily with painting, and explore ideas of consumerism, identity, irony, and graphic design. My goal is to carelessly indulge myself and viewers with art that is playful.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Growing up, I used to believe that I could be a top-tier creator in any creative field I pursued because of the ideas I had. With time, and exposure to so many creatives online, I realized that having ideas isn’t enough. It’s really the people that can execute their ideas clearly that become successful. My art practice has now become about bridging the gap between my ideas and my abilities by focusing on fewer, and more impactful ideas. I’ve adapted a more realistic understanding of my own artistic potential.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
That no one cares about you as much as you care about yourself, therefore do whatever you want.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Not to release a creation until it’s up to your standard. Whether it’s feeling internally rushed, or having minor flaws that you think no one else will notice, perfecting a creation for me is important because it’s really the details that make something extraordinary.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I inspired those around me to be creative and let their inner freak out.
