Story & Lesson Highlights with Marla DiCarlo of Denver Tech Center

Marla DiCarlo shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Marla, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I feel called to step fully into the role of a thought leader for the small business community—something I once hesitated to embrace. For years, I worked quietly behind the scenes, helping business owners navigate the complex process of exiting their companies. However, I now see how many entrepreneurs wait too long or are unprepared, and they end up walking away with far less than they deserve—or worse, nothing at all.

What I used to fear was putting myself out there—sharing my voice, my experiences, and my perspective publicly. But I’ve come to realize that staying quiet serves no one. I’m now committed to using my platform to educate, inspire, and guide business owners so they can proactively work on their business, not just in it, and position themselves for a successful, rewarding exit. I don’t want them to become another statistic. I want them to build a legacy they’re proud of—and I’m no longer afraid to lead the way.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Marla DiCarlo — a former business owner turned M&A advisor and the founder of BizNavigators. I specialize in helping small business owners prepare for and successfully exit their companies. After going through the process myself—both the highs and the hard lessons—I realized there was a huge gap in how entrepreneurs are guided through one of the most important transitions of their lives.

That’s why I created BizNavigators: to bridge the gap between owner readiness and business readiness. We don’t just list companies for sale—we work with owners to increase the value of their business before they ever hit the market. We provide education, strategy, and hands-on support using tools like the Value Builder System, so owners can exit with clarity, confidence, and cash in hand.

Right now, I’m focused on elevating the conversation around what a “successful exit” really looks like—and making sure no business owner becomes a cautionary tale simply because they didn’t know where to start.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Bonds are broken when trust is broken—especially when someone gives their word and doesn’t honor it. I’ve experienced this many times in both business and personal relationships, and it’s painful. Promises create expectations, and when those are ignored or dismissed without accountability, it creates distance, doubt, and often, deep disappointment.

But I also believe people are human. We all make mistakes. That’s why forgiveness is such a powerful tool—not just for the other person, but for ourselves. Forgiveness can open the door to growth and healing. It gives people the chance to reflect, take responsibility, and hopefully not repeat the same mistakes.

That said, forgiveness and reconciliation aren’t the same. You can forgive someone and still choose not to do business with them again. Forgiveness is about releasing the hurt; reconciliation requires trust to be rebuilt over time through consistent actions.

In the end, what restores bonds is honesty, accountability, and a genuine willingness to make things right—not just with words, but through changed behavior.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell her: It’s okay to feel different—you weren’t made to be status quo. You’re meant to stand out, to lead, to be bold, and to embrace who you truly are. Don’t dim your light to fit in. Your uniqueness is your strength.

At the same time, remember to carry humility with your confidence. Lead with love—including love for yourself. Give yourself grace to make mistakes, to learn, and to grow. You don’t have to be perfect to be worthy. You just have to keep showing up as the person you were created to be.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies is that it’s okay to make money at any cost. That success is measured solely by the size of the deal or the number on the check. But that belief is deeply flawed—and dangerous. There is a cost that’s too big: compromising your values, turning a blind eye to injustice, or putting profit above people.

In my work helping business owners exit, I’ve seen firsthand that true success isn’t just about maximizing value—it’s about doing what’s right. It’s about leaving a legacy, making a difference, and treating people with integrity along the way. I believe we have a responsibility to show there’s a better way to build and sell businesses—one that honors people, purpose, and the impact we have on the world.

You can do well and do good. That’s the message I’m committed to spreading.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
They would miss the accountability and honesty I bring to an industry that can often feel cutthroat and transactional. I show up with a human approach—meeting people where they are, especially when they’re overwhelmed and unsure of how to start. My clients know I’ll tell them the truth, even when it’s hard, because I care deeply about their success.

I think they’d also miss my passion. I genuinely love helping small business owners make better choices, increase the value of what they’ve built, and exit on their own terms. For many, I’m more than an advisor—I’m their advocate, their guide, and sometimes, their steady hand through a really emotional process.
