Hi Marta, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
If I am not photographing an elopement or wedding, a typical day for me starts with breakfast with my husband. Then, I take my two dogs for a walk or run before starting my work day. My average work day begins with answering emails and helping current or potential couples and then I work a lot on editing photos to complete couples’ galleries! I will often have a show on in the background while I edit. Some of my favorites are Schitt’s Creek, Friends, and Gilmore Girls! After working all day, I have dinner with my husband and then we take our pups for another walk together in the evening as the sun sets. Then I will usually do a little more work on editing or blog writing, before ending the night watching a show or reading a book!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Marta and I own Mountain Marta Photography. I am an adventure elopement photographer based in Colorado! What I mean by adventure elopement, is a lot of my couples do amazing and adventurous activities on their wedding days. Lots of these include hiking, skiing, off-roading, backpacking, and paddle-boarding! But, I also help couples who maybe aren’t as into some of the more intense activities, create their own adventure, whatever that means to them. Couples who want to have a lakeside picnic, relax in a hammock among aspens, hang out in a mountain town brewery, or stargaze. My goal is to give couples the chance to make their elopement day truly theirs and unique to their relationship, all in the beautiful mountains of Colorado!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents definitely helped mold my work ethic. My parents were both immigrants from Poland and completely started new lives in the United States in their mid to late twenties. They always worked so hard, in particular, to provide for me and my sister. I grew up watching them and how they never gave up. I think it was because of them that when I put my mind to something, or start something new, I never quit.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t be so hard on yourself all the time and enjoy life more! I really think it wasn’t until I started my photography business that I truly feel like I am enjoying life and not just waiting for the weekend or next vacation to experience joy. I was a PhD Chemist before I started my photography business and my whole life, even as a kid, I worked so hard to get straight As, get into the best college, and then continued on to grad school. While at the time I was proud of my success, looking back, I don’t think I was every truly happy doing that. The joy came from feeling successful, but not from doing something that I actually loved. While I do believe that my path to get to where I am was my necessary path, I would just tell my younger self to not take everything so seriously and give myself more time to do the things I love!
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
This kind of goes back to my answer to the previous question. I used to very much believe that the key to success was getting good grades in school and ultimately landing a high paying job. Now, success means so much more than that to me. I would no longer consider myself successful if I was not enjoying what I am doing.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Yes, I believe I am finally doing what I was born to do! I truly love what I do and thinking about how much I have always loved spending time outside, taking photos, and admiring loves stories (yes, I have always been a hopeless romantic), it only makes sense that I would find myself as an elopement photographer. Skiing, camping, hiking, and taking pictures of happy couples is so rewarding to me. I absolutely love helping couples turn their wedding day into one of the most memorable and fun days of their lives together!
