Ras, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
As soon as I awake I give thanks and praise for life to the Almighty. As a chanter and international reggae artist I often start chanting mantras or my own songs. Masters and yogis from India say chanting the Gayitri Mantra is one of the most purifying mantras on earth, its a mantra that gives reverence to the sun. Mantras are sacred vibrational sounds in the holy language of sanskrit then I proceed with other mantras and prayers and often read a psalm from the Bible. Immediately after I do my spiritual practice called Kriya Yoga Meditation that was mastered by the spiritual giants such as Christ, Buddha, Moses, Socrates, Krishna, Yogananda. I center myself, commune and surrender to divine will.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am known internationally as RasMoses, a reggae artist as well as meditation teacher. In addition I am the President of Colorado House of Rastafsri 501c3 and sit on the Board of Directors of Www.uniteethiopia.org.
On August 8th, our organization is releasing a reggae medley with artists from around the world to bring resources and attention of the atrocities that are happening tribaly in Ethiopia. As a rasta man Ethiopia is our spiritual homeland. Rastafari is a worldwide movement that began with the crowning of the King of Kings , The Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah Emperor Haile Selassie the First.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
When I was 14 , I was involved a deadly car accident. Our class was taking joy rides in one of our class mates’ parent’s cars and the unthinkable happened. The car lost control at high speed on a country road. Reports said the car flipped 8 times in the air, I was projected out of the sunroof and sustained terrible injuries however my best friend at the time was instantly killed before my eyes.
It was a long road to recovery physically and emotionally. There were law suits and trials which created alot of stress for my family. One day I recall taking a walk around my neighborhood and felt a feeling of being good, it was a spiritual feeling I felt it rise within me and started to pursue that experience of being still within and connecting with the spirit. This was an awakening of being grateful that my life was spared and the big question came why am I here? What is my work on earth. What does the Almighty Creator want of me.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would instil faith and gratitude and most importantly to pursue my gifts wholeheartedly and not get distracted by the world.
As musician and artist, I wish I didn’t resist those piano lessons my mom painstakingly had me take.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
The Beatles manager once said fake it till you make it. So The Beatles walked around like stars before thier first hit song.
When I first pursued music at the request of my elders I was not good ha, I had charisma and stage presence but I had no training in timing, harmony, pitch amd staying in key but with practice and lessons I became good and get better ever day. My music has been played on radio stations throughout the world and have a current top 40 hit around Latin America.
I am the same off stage and on. Through spiritual practices, the guidance of the elders my music is a ministry to uplift and unite the people. I am always ready to share the love.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
It was never about my fame or fortune but bringing people to the joy of the indwelling spirit. I am doing my part to build the kingdom of heaven on earth.
