We recently had the chance to connect with Travis Hochard and have shared our conversation below.
Travis , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Toward the end of the season I wear a lot of hats. On any given day, I might post on social media, help with check-ins, run shuttles, guide a raft, or even take out the trash. My role is very diverse throughout the year, but especially at the beginning and end of the rafting season when flexibility is key.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Travis Hochard, and I’m the President of Operations at River Runners, a whitewater rafting outfitter on the Arkansas River with locations near the Royal Gorge and Buena Vista, Colorado. I first trained as a guide here in 2000, thinking it would just be a fun summer job, but I quickly realized I’d found my passion. Even while working part-time for several seasons, I kept growing within the company and eventually moved into management in 2010. What I love most is that this role keeps me connected to the river community—helping guests create unforgettable experiences on the water—while also giving me the opportunity to lead a team and keep the business running smoothly. For me, it’s truly a dream job because it blends adventure, people, and the unique seasonal rhythm of the industry.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with my mom has had a huge impact on the person I’ve become. She was a single mother who cleaned houses for a living, and I greatly admire her work ethic, her love for family, and her appreciation for the outdoors. Those values have shaped who I am today and continue to guide the way I approach both work and life.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Back in 2009, my wife and I had just bought a home and had two small kids when I was laid off from what I thought would be my long-term career at a biofuels company. It was a really difficult moment, and I questioned what was next for me. I called River Runners for a reference, and instead, they offered me work—which eventually turned into a full-time position managing the company. What felt devastating at the time ended up opening the door to the greatest opportunity of my career.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Spending time in nature is essential to my mental and physical well-being. It’s where I go to unplug from the constant noise of technology and social media, and it’s also where I find my best opportunities for exercise. Whether it’s being on the river, mountain biking, skiing, or simply getting outside, nature helps me stay grounded, healthy, and balanced.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m surrounded by close friends and family, or when I’m navigating a rapid, a trail, or a ski run. While these scenarios are very different, they all push me to be fully present in the moment. In those times, I’m not worried about the past or the future—I’m simply living..
