Rising Stars: Meet Luke Huxley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Huxley.

Luke Huxley

Hi Luke, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hey there! I’m Luke, the founder of AstroTours.org. My journey began in Denver, Colorado, where my love for the sky was sparked at an early age. One of my earliest memories is pointing at the moon as a baby and calling it a “ball.” This fascination grew when my grandfather gave me a 4-inch Mak-Cassegrain telescope in middle school, which I still use today.

I graduated in 2016 from the University of Colorado with a major in physics and minors in astrophysics and geophysics. After college, I spent a year in Australia working as a tour guide for “Space Gandalf” at Astro Tours Broome. This experience inspired me to bring similar stargazing adventures to the U.S.

Upon returning to Colorado, I realized there were no local experiences like the ones I had in Australia. So, I founded AstroTours.org to offer hands-on night tours of the sky using telescopes, lasers, and binoculars. Our tours provide a unique opportunity to see planets, constellations, nebulae, clusters, galaxies, and shooting stars, all while fostering a sense of shared wonder about our universe.

AstroTours.org partners with diverse groups and events to inspire the next generation of astronomers and promote sustainable tourism. We’re committed to dark sky preservation and ensuring our operations have a minimal environmental footprint.

I look forward to sharing the wonders of the night sky with you on one of our tours!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting and running AstroTours.org hasn’t always been a smooth road. We’ve faced several challenges along the way:

Creating Awareness: One of the biggest obstacles was getting the word out about our tours. Since stargazing tours are a niche market, it took significant effort and creative marketing to build awareness and attract customers.

Weather Dependence: Our tours are heavily dependent on clear skies and favorable weather conditions. This means that sometimes we have to reschedule or cancel tours due to inclement weather, which can be disappointing for our guests and challenging for our scheduling.

Location and Accessibility: Finding the perfect locations that are both dark enough for optimal stargazing and accessible to our customers was another challenge. We had to balance the need for dark skies with the convenience of being close enough for guests to travel.

Sustainability and Light Pollution: Advocating for dark sky preservation and educating the public about light pollution is an ongoing challenge. We strive to conduct our tours in an environmentally friendly manner and raise awareness about the importance of preserving our night skies.

Despite these challenges, our passion for astronomy and the positive feedback from our guests keep us motivated. Each obstacle has provided an opportunity to learn and improve, making AstroTours.org stronger and more resilient. We’re committed to continuing our mission of bringing the wonders of the night sky to people and fostering a sense of shared wonder and connection to our universe.
