Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Stravinsky.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Tyes By Tara was founded with a spark of inspiration after wearing a Halloween costume with a lacy school girl necktie. I was fascinated by the juxtaposition of the soft feminine details and the strong masculine symbolism that existed in this single costume accessory. I loved it so much that went on a search to find more. I seriously looked in every department store, boutique, Halloween shop and online store at the time, cannot find anything like it. So, I decided to teach myself and make my own. At the time, it was just fun. My intention was to make something that I liked and wanted to wear. But then I got laid off of my job at a hotel design firm. This was early 2009 and the economy was not that so great. So, to make money, I went Denver area salons, boutiques and even strip clubs with a little pink box full of neckties that I made and pitched them to anyone that would give me the time of day.
At first, no one really cared and no one really bought anything. But one boutique in Denver picked it up and that gave me the inspiration to keep going. Then, I got a little press on a local TV station, Denver Fox31. And then, I made more connections and I got the chance to go to the Playboy Mansion and be apart of their Wounded Warrior Halloween party. Pretty much the next five years were little glimmers of inspiration that nudged me forward to keep going even when it was hard, I was pretty broke and I was working multiple jobs. I continued to send out samples to stores, to magazines and kept designing and working on my website.
One morning, I got up pretty discouraged and frustrated and went to check my email, and I got what looked like an automated email and I was about to delete it, but then, I realized it was a purchase order. An order from a lingerie chain in the Midwest and it was an order for $5000. I remember I just sat there in silence and then, I broke into tears. I finally felt like this was a legitimate business. This order funded my first tradeshow in Las Vegas and allowed me to make the connections to move forward to where I am today.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My friend Marisa told me once, that if it was easy then everyone would do it. It has not been a smooth road, but a necessary road to learning what I needed to learn. Most of my struggles have come from restraints and self-doubt. Resource restraints, time restraints, and restraints I placed on myself personally. My advice to any women starting their journey is to have the courage to believe in yourself and surround yourself with people that believe in you.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Networking is so dynamic today. There are seriously so many different ways you can network, whether it’s in person or digitally, I think understanding what your goal is to networking is important. Do you just want to meet more people? Or are you trying to meet more people to help you achieve something? What do you want to achieve? After you understand your intention, you will be more focused on finding people to help you do whatever it is that you want to do. Since I have a very niche brand, I tend to focus more on the digital space to seek out business opportunities and make connections.
