Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrienne Sells.
Adrienne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After many years as a professional ballerina and experiencing the lasting physical impacts it takes on the body, I discovered the healing power of yoga. Mentally, physically, and spiritually. Yoga made me feel whole again and improved my flexibility, my strength, and my mental well-being. So much so, that it became imperative for me to share the techniques and benefits with others.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, not smooth at all. The biggest challenge was leaving the corporate world to pursue my passion as a full-time instructor. Even though the corporate world was a bit of a grind day-to-day, it did offer structure and benefits and most importantly, a regular paycheck. Leaving those comforts is a terrifying thing, but if you have the courage and determination to succeed, it can be the most rewarding.
Also, my intention was always to offer online yoga classes after building a regular class and one-on-one schedule; however, the current pandemic forced me to jump headfirst into Zoom online instruction. At first, it was a bit daunting, but it’s now become an incredibly powerful tool to connect with new and old faces and provide a much needed physical outlet during these challenging times.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
At Skyedancer, I teach yoga classes and offer one-on-one sessions. What sets me apart from others is my years of experience as a professional dancer, studio owner, instructor, and yogi. I grew up under the guidance and discipline of The Royal Academy of Dance, performed as a professional dancer for Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet and Ballet Austin, and taught classical ballet for over 25 years. As a result, my love for yoga and dance are interconnected – the fluidity of movement, the mental focus, and concentration on form.
Making people feel better, spiritually refreshed, and aligned with their whole being is what makes me happy and proud. Yoga and dance are more than just stretching and/or following a set of steps – they are a way of life.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Good and bad things happen to each and every one of us. I’ve certainly had my fair share – too many to list here. And while it’s easy to write those things off as random luck, in yoga, we learn that each of us has the ability to create the lives we want to live – that we contribute to everything we experience in life.
All of that said, I’ve been blessed with a loving family and set of friends, supportive of my goals and dreams. Without them, I would not have had the courage and commitment to start Skyedancer Yoga.
