Today we’d like to introduce you to Agnieszka Wormus.
Agnieszka, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been taking photos my entire life, I was always the person behind the camera at school events and always enjoyed pushing myself to be creative. When I finished high school in Switzerland, I started working on my architectural degree as I thought that was the path that fit the most as I also always loved drawing and have a deep love for modern buildings. While I was working on my master’s degree and working full time at an architectural firm in Boston AND shooting weddings on the weekends, I realized that it was all just too much and that I really enjoyed my little side job that was taking off more and more. I really enjoy being my own boss – even though that comes with booked weekends and late afternoon shoots. You have to find the right balance as a mom, I have three kids and a husband that I love dearly and of course, I want to spend as much time as I can with too.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think I remember a quote saying “Smooth roads never make good drivers.” My biggest bump was probably when we moved from Boston to the Denver area. Losing all my previous clients and having made my name there was not easy. A lot of my business comes from word of mouth, lots of clients were recommending me to their friends & family which I absolutely loved. We also had a little baby when we moved and had two more kids after our first, so my available shooting time was limited and I was usually touching up the photos at night after everybody was tucked in. I think as a business owner, you often have to figure things out as you go. You learn what works for you and what doesn’t, every business is so different.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I have worked in so many different branches of the photo industry, it’s fun to look back. I started off doing stock photography, never imagining I could photograph people. Little did I know, I then got asked to shoot weddings, which was very different but oh so fun. A good wedding photographer will help you plan your wedding timeline and help run the whole day. There goes a lot of trusts and work into the prep work for the biggest day of one’s life, that I don’t think most people see. You have to deal with tricky family situations, keep everybody organized and on time, you have to hold hands and calm nerves… all while you are so excited for the couple to start their wonderful journey.
When we moved to Colorado, I started shooting lots of families. The outdoors here are just so breathtaking and I absolutely love watching the kiddos grow. Most of my families I’ve known since the little one’s first week – I love when the kiddos run up to me and know they’re just about to have some fun time with the silly lady that takes their photos. I feel very fortunate that so many of my families treat me like family. I still shoot a ton of weddings all over the US, I’ve covered many different states by now. I love to travel and am always up for a little adventure.
My newest photo adventure has me shoot models – it’s what kept me busy and creative during the cold winter months. It’s fun when creative souls meet and create and it’s fun to do something a little different. I have really enjoyed working with local musicians, actors, dancers, and designers these last few months. I think shooting all those different types of photography (stock photography, wedding photos, boudoir, newborn and family photography, business headshots as well as real estate photography and now editorial photography) has taught me a lot and I love keeping my portfolio diverse.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Denver’s fun vibe. There are so many beautiful neighborhoods to shoot in; industrial, fun and colorful, I love the downtown area with its tall skyscrapers and of course all the beautiful parks and gardens outside the city. Everything seems to just be a short drive away.
