Meet Camilla Carboni

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camilla Carboni.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Camilla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in South Africa and as a young girl, I frequented 5 Star Hotels with my Grandmother. She taught me to enjoy the finer things in life and appreciate the little details that come with high-end service. I took it all in— watching the hotel staff surprise and delight guests, and learning the expectations of the most discerning clientele—unbeknown to me that years later, I would specialize in luxury. One day my darling Gran gifted me a Mickey Mouse watch and that moment opened up a whole new world of opportunity for me. We did not have Disney in South Africa and Walt Disney’s notion of “if you can dream it you can do it” sparked my interest in America.

After graduating with a Master’s Degree in Media Reception Psychology and English, during which I had the incredible opportunity of studying abroad at the University of Iowa, I became determined to create my own American Dream. Waiting patiently for green card lottery results, I immigrated to Vancouver, Canada, but kept taking quick escapes to Hawaii to enjoy the warmer weather. I finally moved to Hawaii in 2009, after receiving my green card. There I worked in Communications at a top Spa and wrote non-stop in my spare time—early mornings on the beach with a cup of ABC store coffee, on the bus headed to work in downtown Honolulu, and late nights once home. It kept me feeling alive during a time of unfamiliarity in a new country and it turned out to be a game-changer for me…

One unassuming day I received an email from an Account Director at Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Waikiki, thanking me for an article I wrote about a restaurant at one of their properties and asking me if I was interested in working for them. After meeting with the Director of Sales and General Manager of Hawaii’s most prestigious hotel, I began my official writing career, where I was finally able to apply my knowledge of luxury and went on to create Starwood’s online communications best practice manual, and train staff and colleagues at hotels across the globe.

It was also in Hawaii, where I met my now-husband, Matt, a Colorado native who convinced me to move to Denver. Very shortly after relocating, I began working for a technology company by day and continued writing by night. I later signed a deal with a publishing company and my first published book became an Amazon bestseller and featured in bookstores around the world. One of my career highlights thus far was signing books on 5th Avenue in New York.

But, while I have enjoyed success along my journey, the road to becoming a successful entrepreneur was a long and challenging one—I will never sugar coat that for anyone. I think too often people see the end result and forget to look at the years of hard work it took to get there. I worked very long hours, weekends, and holidays to get my business off the ground and get to where I am today, and YES—it was so worth it!

Today, as a Luxury Brand Copywriter, member of the Global Luxury Expert Network, and contributor to The Luxury Network Magazine, I have the honor of curating copywriting for luxury brands around the world. I am proud to say I am living my American Dream, but I have big plans ahead still to conquer…

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was anything but smooth sailing! As an immigrant, I had unique obstacles to overcome on top of starting and scaling my business, such as having no credit history and not knowing anyone when I first arrived in the States. There were many moments when it felt too hard and I questioned if it was all worth it. There were also times when nothing seemed to be working and I wondered if it ever would.

I worked exceptionally long hours for years, basically running my business full-time (before and after work, on weekends, and on holidays) while working full-time until I was in a place that I felt confident enough to take the leap to full-time entrepreneurship. One of my mentors says: “if you really want to develop as a person, open a business,” and I think she’s right. It takes courage, guts, determination, and resilience to feel the fear and keep moving forward in spite of it. I believe that it is all 100% worth it to get to where you want to be, though, and I’ll keep growing to get to my next level, which I’m sure will come with new obstacles.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have many, but one of my all-time favorites was reclining on the poolside lounge chairs at the Beverly Hills Hotel with my Grandmother and my Barbie doll, ordering orange juice as if it were an exotic cocktail!
