Check out our conversation with Charla below.

Hi Charla, so great to have you join us again. For folks who might have missed our earlier conversations, can you please take a minute to briefly introduce yourself?
I’m a photographer in Boulder, CO, and I am also in grad school preparing to be a self-love therapist! With anyone who works with me, we work together to create the image/vision they want. I don’t ever want my clients to be unhappy, so I put a lot of effort into making sure they are happy! I love helping make a client’s vision come true and I will always help every step of the way, but I try not to make it my vision. I truly want it to be the client’s vision. I feel it is more empowering that way. I photograph concerts and band promos, engagements/proposals, weddings, events, anniversaries (all things couples!), senior photos, portraits, headshots, family photos, festivals, self-love shoots, maternity, birthdays, business events, real estate, album covers/bands, products, landscape, boudoir, pretty much everything!

Do you have a new project you’re planning on releasing soon? How can people get involved?
I do! I won’t give too many details yet as I’m still creating the project, but it is related to self-love. I’m super excited to announce it soon! Send me an email or a Facebook message for more details. or Charla Harvey on Facebook!

What has your 2021 looked like so far?
I started grad school this year, so I have been learning a lot about myself and how I want to show up in the world. I have also had new opportunities with photography and new clients. I have added new skills and let go of old habits that were no longer serving me. I am more committed to self-love than ever before, and I have extended the invitation to all my friends and clients to do the same! I am also so excited shows seem to be coming back!

What do you hope people understand from your photography? What is your message?
I really want to help people love themselves as who they are. I definitely love to enhance the colors a little (especially since the camera loses some of the color in the photo sometimes), but I truly try to capture the real beauty of a person, no matter what the shoot is. I want my clients (and everyone!) to love themselves for who they are, not for who they’re not. Sometimes after getting their photos, clients will say, “Oh my goodness! You and your camera made me look so good! How did you do that?” and I make sure to emphasize that really is what they look like, but we are our own harshest critics! I strive to capture the energy and natural beauty of a show, a wedding, or wherever I am! Ultimately, my message is: You are a unique gift to this world, just as you are! Thank you for sharing it with me 🙂

Have you been able to photograph during the pandemic?
Fortunately, yes! I have been hired for plenty of creatively organized weddings, surprise proposals, family shoots, self-love shoots, and outdoor shows. I actually shot a few indoor shows as well, always wearing a mask of course! I even got to shoot Red Rocks for a show two nights in a row! I definitely don’t have as much business as I had pre-pandemic, but I am so grateful for all of the shoots I was booked for! I also made a bunch of masks using my photos! That was such a cool way to get my art out there while also providing masks. I sold some and donated some! I also made Black Lives Matter masks using art from an incredible artist @mawhyah (with her permission) and gave all proceeds to Black Lives Matter!

What is your ideal vision for the future of your business?
I am going to be a therapist and also a counselor, so ideally, I will be able to create a way to combine these two passions. I’m not sure what that is going to look like yet, but my next big project is going to be a good start to this vision! I also want to be able to give back to the community and start a nonprofit, where I can take professional headshots for people that may not be able to afford it, for example. I also want to give voice to others who don’t always have one, so some of my projects will definitely focus on that goal.

Any advice for folks reading this and feeling inspired? How can folks get started if they are just at the start of their journey?
If you’re just getting started, pay attention to what makes you feel inspired! You will be an incredible photographer if you focus on what you are truly passionate about! Practice, take photos of as much as you can, but pay attention to what brings you joy. Find your niche, and excel! Don’t get discouraged if you “mess up.” This is all about learning and doing better next time!
