Meet Courtland Wilson of Courtland Photography in Parker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtland Wilson.

Courtland, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I fell in love with photography during my time in the Army from 2005-2010. I was lucky enough to be stationed in the beautiful town of Schweinfurt, Germany where I quickly became obsessed with documenting my life’s journey in a new continent. I took my point-and-shoot camera with me to every new city and country I visited, including Iraq where I served two combat deployments as an Infantryman.

When I finished my military service in 2010, I attended school at Metro State University in Denver studying photojournalism and had aspirations of becoming a war photographer. However, when I was shooting different photography gigs to pay the bills, I discovered wedding photography and my mindset quickly changed. I now had an outlet to implement my photojournalism skills without putting my life in harm’s way. I could now document people’s most happiest day of their lives instead of their worst.

Wedding photography seemed like a good fit for me, and I quickly started shooting weddings as a contractor for various wedding photography companies. After a year or so of building my portfolio, I was confident enough to start a company of my own, and thus Courtland Photography was born. I’ve been shooting weddings for four years now and haven’t looked back since.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like any business, getting started is not an easy process. Standing out from the rest of the crowd always has its own challenges, especially with photography. Attracting leads and finding new clients is a major aspect of running a successful business, and I’ve found that word of mouth has helped me the most when finding new clients. Treat your clients right and they’ll be more than happy to recommend you to their friends and family.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My photography company specializes in weddings primarily, but I also shoot a fair amount of portraits and events. I’m known for my vibrant, dramatic, and candid photographs. I thrive on capturing moments as opposed to relying solely on posing. My off-camera lighting techniques, upbeat personality, and gorgeous wedding albums I provide my clients help me separate myself from the crowd.

What were you like growing up?
I was always interested in doing something adventurous with my life. If I wasn’t doing something exciting, then I wasn’t satisfied. I started snow skiing when I was four years old. I started taekwondo when I was five years old, and competed in various tournaments around the country until I was 13. Some of the things I wanted to be when I grew up was becoming a detective, a news reporter, or a counter-terrorist.

I was always intrigued with joining the military, but it wasn’t until 9/11 until my decision to join the Army became solidified. I chose the infantry because I wanted to be on the ground bringing the fight to the enemy and defending the innocent.

  • My base wedding pricing starts at $3,500 and increases depending on which add-on items my clients choose to include.
