Meet Stephanie Baudhuin of Crummies Meatless Crumble in Milliken

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Baudhuin.

Stephanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Crummies was founded back in 2017 when I gave up on commercialized meat, “cold turkey”. I was working as a graphic designer at the time and my husband did most if not all of the cooking. He was ever so supportive of his new found veggie in a truly, meat and Potato household. There were a lot of interesting moments that arose with my new found dietary needs but one stood out more than most. WHAT TO DO ABOUT TACO TUESDAY?

We searched through the grocery shelves and products and decided that they were very chemically focused and that these large companies were frankly, doing it wrong. We decided to come up with our own and with some recipe searches and some R&D, we knew we had something great. Our business was founded about a year ago with the goal of providing a delicious, versatile, and simple alternative that is soy, gluten and nut free.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say that it has been a generally smooth road with lots of twists and turns along the way. Back in 2017 when the company and product were founded, I was working full time as a Graphic Designer and had never envisioned myself and an entrepreneur, let alone a plant-based entrepreneur. We knew we had something marketable and delicious but now for the fun part, making it a legitimate business. I was very lucky to have the owner of Cowgirl Catering as a friend and she offered up space in her commercial kitchen for Crummies to use for production. Sandy Beardsley has been a very important friend and mentor for me and Crummies.

In January of 2020 I was also fortunate enough to be accepted into an entrepreneurship Accelerator, EforAll in Longmont CO. EforAll provided me with the structure and discipline to make Crummies Meatless Crumble successful. Not to mention, the mentors and resources I will continue to nourish throughout my Business’s life and beyond are priceless.

I’m a very driven founder and entrepreneur and have taken my work ethic and life experiences into account every step of the way.
We were very excited to get into our second farmers market season beginning in April but with Covid 19 hitting food businesses right around that time, it was uncertain what this season would look like for Crummies. I like to say we oscillated, vs pivoted. We are always looking for new ways to meet customers and gain more exposure. An online ordering platform was a valuable option that we have now implimented. We are proud to provide front porch delivery in northern colorado. We have in person farmers markets on the schedule until the Fall and are looking forward to the months ahead.

Please tell us about your business.
Crummies is a plant-based meat alternative product that behaves like ground meat in any recipe, but all our seven simple ingredients come from the land and not the lab. We are here for the Vegans and Vegetarians but also the “Reductiarians” that may find plant-based eating somewhat intimidating or out of reach. We believe that our product provides everyone with a health conscious and easy solution to the obviously growing phenomenon. I would say that I’m most proud of the success we have had so far. It was indescribable to make our first sale back in May of 2017, but the moments of pride keep rolling in, as we continue to grow and thrive.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I was born in Anchorage Alaska and grew up with a very close relationship with the outdoors. I would say that my fondest memories as a child pertain to road and camping trips with my family. We would never bring enough water, and always share scary stories around the camp fire. That is perhaps why I have an affection for hydration and horror films to this day.
