Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Allman.
Dean, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been involved with photography since I was 14 years old. When we were dating, my girlfriend bought me my first SLR and I proposed to her that night. Forty-one years later and we are still together. I got serious with landscape photography in 2003, then gradually moved to doing portrait work, travel, and street photography. I am presently building a studio here at my home. I look forward to getting involved with all kinds of projects when that is completed later this fall.
Has it been a smooth road?
It is not something I do for a living. I manage our investments for that. My wife is very supportive as well. It is what I am most passionate about. It was harder to embrace when I was working full time, first as a social worker, and then later as a web developer. But when I left those careers, it became my full-time avocation. I call myself a semi-pro. I will take on jobs for pay, but I love having time to do personal projects as well.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I guess I am not afraid to take risks with photography, nor do I want to be pigeon-holed as just a landscape guy or just someone who does portraits. One of my favorite shoots was as a photographer at the World Bodypainting Festival in Klagenfurt, Austria in 2019. I have several signature images in my portfolio from that shoot. I am always trying to stretch with learning new techniques and looking for interesting subject matter, as well as connecting and networking with others who share that point of view.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Denver metro has really grown as an area where the arts are appreciated. If you are a creative type, you have all kinds of opportunities here to practice your passion. So sure, Denver is a great place to grow.
