Meet Dean Dalvit of EVstudio in North Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Dalvit.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dean. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always had a love for buildings and the built environment. Spending most of the Summers of my youth working in some form of construction, I had been advised by many of the “old-timers” that I worked with to get an education and become licensed so I could be on the design side of the construction industry. My father was an engineer at a construction firm and my mother was an artist and entrepreneur. My academic career took me through two engineering degrees as I felt that left the most options open. After working for a few years as an engineer, I discovered that Architecture was my true passion, so I underwent the lengthy process to become licensed as an Architect. Then later, I went ahead and became licensed as an engineer as well.

I started my own Architecture firm in 2005 and after a year of great success (which to an Architect means long hours and sleepless nights), I brought on a partner and EVstudio was born. We have grown steadily over the years (now to 60 employees) and the business is based on the simple fundamentals of high client service, great design and practical creativity. As a dual licensed professional, the DNA of EVstudio is also multidisciplinary and, like my own professional experiences, the firm has deep expertise in Architecture as well as Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Engineering with subspecialties in Field Services to help Contractors do their work. Throughout that time, I was supported by my loving wife, Dana, who has served the firm a number of ways and currently runs the bookkeeping and banking for the company.

Dana and I have also purchased, renovated and leased residential and commercial real estate for over 20 years. I also raised two children in our hometown of Evergreen and did all of the things fathers do from cub scout den leader and little league coach to sharing my deep love for the outdoors with the family, including skiing, biking, hiking, climbing and camping. And all the while, I played continuously in a number of working bands that range from bluegrass to rock and everything in between. A lot of people talk about work-life balance and for me, the integration of all of my passions and interests is how I strike that balance.

Has it been a smooth road?
Well, that depends on your perspective. Running the company has been more like a roller coaster where the ride is thrilling, at times uncertain and the slow parts are really building anticipation for the next rush. Developing, owning and leasing real estate was initially exciting due to the large risks you take early on, but after some stability, has become a fairly predictable piece of our overall operation. Raising children has been the true accomplishment of my life and while there were occasional times of stress, it was a fantastic journey.

Playing music is more of a stress relief than anything else. By far the largest struggle was right when I started the firm, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. We were in the midst of purchasing a mixed-use building for my business at the same time. Running the upstart business, navigating the purchase and management of the building and raising the kids while Dana underwent aggressive treatment which involved surgeries, chemo and radiation therapies was not a time I ever want to revisit. So yes, I guess that was a struggle for sure, but in hindsight looking back, we’re so much stronger having gone through it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with EVstudio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
EVstudio is a full-service in-house design firm specializing in architecture, engineering, planning, and other design services for commercial and residential projects. For more than a decade, we have managed the full spectrum of design services for new construction and renovations, both large and small, for sectors including commercial, residential, multifamily, mixed-use, industrial, office, retail, hospitality, education, healthcare, government, parks and recreation, worship and more. We’re known for a fully integrated design process and high client service.

We’re set apart from others because of the sheer breadth and depth of different projects we take on, and that versatility leads to great creative and innovative opportunities to cross-pollinate design ideas from different project types. Most of all, I am proud of the team that we’ve built – all professionals that are at the top of their fields and so capable to have built a portfolio of work that I would never have imagined only 14 years ago when I started.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
As a Colorado native, I have seen Denver grow up from its cow town roots and enter in the new age of vitality that we are now in. It’s great that the diversification has created stability so we are no longer reliant on just a few industries. Growth comes with it’s challenges and things like traffic come along, but the City’s leadership has done a great job managing that growth. That growth has also fueled my business, so I can’t complain. My least favorite part about Denver? I honestly don’t have one.
