Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaby Wentworth.
Gaby, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in the Detroit area and am the daughter of a teacher and an entrepreneur. I have two older sisters who live in London (soon Japan) and Syracuse. My mom passed away six years ago from ovarian cancer and my dad is still plugging along traveling the world and enjoying retirement.
I had a great education as a kid, both public and private, and spent my free time swimming and riding horses (hunter jumper). After high school, I studied Sociology at The University of Notre Dame and then after various adventures around the country working in business, farming and as a camp director, I got my masters in social work at the University of Denver. I’ve always been fascinated with human relationships and how people function! I’m now a licensed clinical social worker with a background in mental health. I worked in community mental health for three years after receiving my master’s degree and then took some time off to have my two kids, Poppy (5) and Max (3). During that “time off” I realized what an issue sleep can be for some families with small children. Mine was one of those families. After two years of struggling with sleep with my first child and then having a second baby, I hired a sleep consultant. Her knowledge, clarification of all of the theories out there, her coaching and support was a game changer. She quickly made my mental health, marriage, and capacity to function so much better that I decided I had to do the same for others. I got my education and certification as a child sleep consultant through The Family Sleep Institute and started Rockabye Rockies in July of 2017. I have now been a pediatric sleep consultant for just about two years. It’s not a well-known profession and it’s not regulated by the State like an LCSW is, but I can honestly say that it has been a great move professionally because I have helped dozens of families improve their mental and physical health by providing them with knowledge, clarification, encouragement, and support around their children’s sleep. I really love my work. It’s fulfilling and challenging. No baby or family is the same so I’m always on my toes trying to be sure I’m addressing all of the right issues, communicating properly with the family and being sure that all of my customers feel like I am supporting them in reaching their sleep goals. I also recently taught three classes about sleep at the teen parents high school and am preparing to teach fellow mental health clinicians about how to help children who have experienced trauma sleep better.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Entrepreneurship is never a “smooth road”. I have been lucky to have a lot of success with my clients because they are amazing people and are motivated to make a change! I have a few situations that still “haunt” me because things didn’t turn out as I had hoped they would. I am working with humans, not robots, so sometimes all of the knowledge in the world about how to help children sleep better will not work for each child or family. I have a very small operation and only work with so many families at a time. I think keeping my client load small and staying on top of the “to do’s” will allow me to keep the struggles at bay.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Rockabye Rockies – what should we know?
I’m a pediatric sleep consultant at Rockabye Rockies. I educate, coach and support parents or caregivers over the phone or in-person as they address sleep challenges that their children are experiencing. I’m known for giving my clients one-on-one attention and for being responsive, knowledgeable and compassionate. As a company, I’m really proud of the help that I’m able to provide. Sleep is critical for functioning well and for your mental health. I am so grateful to be able to give people the gift of sleep. There aren’t too many sleep consultants out there! I’d say what sets me apart is my knowledge, passion and responsiveness. This is my full-time gig so I’m readily available to all of my clients if they need me.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
