Today we’d like to introduce you to Jubilee Stevens.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jubilee. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
For most of my working career, I’ve struggled to be fulfilled in what I’m doing and lacked passion. However, I have always worked hard and pushed myself to achieve my roles. Even so, I bounced around many types of jobs from customer service, showroom management, sales and marketing and working in a non-profit to find something that would light a fire within me. Often times there were aspects of my roles that I enjoyed but overall I felt like there was something missing. I also never had that “life-long dream” of being something like a doctor when I grew up so, I didn’t follow a certain path to get where I am today. Trying different roles, moving around different states, trying different things always left me searching for something more. So often I think people have to do jobs out of necessity without giving little thought into what they really want to do or enjoy. It was extremely hard for me to align my feelings of wanting to succeed and be passionate about what I am doing simultaneously.
Finally, at the end of 2018, I decided something had to change! I was recommend to read the book, “What Color is Your Parachute. 2019: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers” by Richard N. Bolles. I dove in and started doing all of the exercises that the book outlined. I so wish someone had given me this book in college or right before graduation over 11 years ago because it was so enlightening! By walking you through various exercises, Bolles helps you identify not only what you should be doing it, but your preferred work environment, what type of people you like to work with, what motivates you, your top skills and how that translates into real-life work. I dedicated time to read and invest into the exercises and things began to become more clear. Not only did it reiterate what I knew I was good at, but it helped clarify what I enjoyed doing. By analyzing past roles and what aspects I enjoyed in those roles, one thing kept coming back….project management and planning.
Suddenly, it became so clear to me! I have ALWAYS loved planning events, coming up with ideas, seeing a project from start to finish. Even in my personal life, I spent much of my free time doing just that event planning. From working on my university Alumni Board (Pepperdine University) to helping plan events for friends, to working with an organization called Gals that Brunch, I was constantly planning events and did it for free because I loved it! It just clicked, that’s what I wanted to do. I had heard it said, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” And that was it… I wanted to plan events, take care of projects, help people be successful in every aspect of planning!
Thus, J2 Planning was born. My own event planning company, a full-service experience agency, offering a wide range of accommodations and services to create exclusive and uncommon experiences for every event imaginable. From special private events and parties to large corporate events with everything to complete a project or event from start to finish.
The name J2 stands for my name Jubilee Joy but truly pays homage to my brother Jonathan Stevens who has been my biggest supporter, confidant and initial investor in my company. Jonathan has not only supported me along my nebulous career path, but he helped push me to find a passion and to start my own company. I am forever grateful to him and his support.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road at all and there have been quite a few challenges along the way! Once I realized what I wanted to do, I was ready to jump in; except that I didn’t have any clients. I was so excited to start a business that I didn’t realize how much time and effort truly goes into it.
One of the biggest struggles was knowing where to start. I felt like I had this great idea but now what? I had to take a step back to actually set a plan for my business. You know, Business Planning 101. I don’t think people realize what it takes to actually start a business even just from a legal standpoint – how do you file? What type of organization or corporation is it? Setting up a website, branding, marketing, etc. These were all things I had to think through and execute.
The second biggest struggle was how do I find clients and make sales? People weren’t just going to come to me in the beginning just because I had “officially” started a business. I had to figure out a way to market my services, make sales, find clients and close deals – something I hadn’t really done before.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
I am a California native and am the youngest and only girl with three older brothers hence, the name. My parents were excited to finally have a girl! You can imagine what growing up was like with three brothers, a lot of rough play. I enjoyed playing with my brothers but also had no problem playing alone in my room with my numerous dolls and barbies which they never enjoyed doing. I think having three older brothers also made me a lot tougher from the occasional rough play to learning how to stand up for myself. I was just happy to be included and really didn’t have much say in family activities since often I just had to go along for the ride.
Oddly enough, I was also an extremely organized child who truly enjoyed arranging my dolls and accessories in order, to cleaning up after playtime before moving to the next activity.
I thoroughly enjoyed crafts and makings things as a young girl which often resulted in homemade presents for all of my family members for celebrations. I always loved school and learning and was a high-achieving student throughout all of my education.
I also thoroughly enjoyed baking and doing everything to help my mom in the house. I was lucky enough to have a mother who stayed home to raise me and my three brothers with an extremely hard-working father who was always doing what was best for our family.
Baking became a hobby of mine at a young age; from helping my mom in the kitchen, who also loved to cook and bake, to trying my hand out with my first Easy-Bake Oven. This is a hobby I still enjoy to this day by baking things from scratch, watching baking competition shows, trying my hand out at new recipes and even providing cookies at a friend’s wedding recently.
