In January of 2015, just after graduating from CU with an MFA in Dance / Entrepreneurial Business – my DAM production company was born in a small town-home location in Boulder, CO. Our small dance studio was a converted bedroom in the basement and our costume inventory/workshop took up residency in the one car garage. DAM Entertainment – Dance Art Media was on the map and ready to make its presence known to the CO community.

By June of 2017, I had enough foundation to venture onward and upward. So, I bought a pre-existing business/dance studio in Lakewood, CO and set my sights high with the new home of my DAM business. I gave it some new paint, deep cleaning and then buckled down, determined to grow, expand, and bring the joy of dance entertainment to the local community and beyond. Just a few months ago, in June of this year, I was able to take yet another great big leap and relocated the studio/company to a bigger and better facility in a higher-end location. Now in our upgraded facility in the Bowles Marketplace in Littleton, I could not be more proud of what I (we) have accomplished (with lost of the help of course) :).

This past year has undoubtedly put us on the map as officially “successful”.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In addition to the usually overwhelming logistics of starting a new business venture, the previous owner of the purchased studio blatantly attempted to sabotage my success immediately after the sale/purchase. Initially, we lost a ton of clients due to an outright breach of contract. That only begins to touch the surface as far as challenges go. I then had to have emergency gall bladder removal surgery in January of 2018 and that set my progress back considerably 8-10 weeks. Then in July of 2018, my father got very ill suddenly and passed away without much warning. This was unquestionably the hardest struggle I’ve had to endure.

By January of 2019, I was in a legal battle with my former landlord, regarding an unscrupulous neighboring business violating zoning laws. The outcome ruled in my favor but the only sensible resolution was to pick up and relocate. The physical and financial logistics of relocating a niche business involved months of literal blood, sweat, and tears. The satisfaction that has come with accomplishing the impossible and overcoming all of these (another unmentioned) obstacles is truly the most rewarding part of all that I have done with this business these past three years.

“Time and money — overcoming them is just a matter of never giving up and being creative in finding ways to conquer challenges, as well as finding folks who are willing to help. I’ve had so many volunteers during the move. It would be lovely if we could recognize the people that have helped us. It’s not just me, and it’s not just my staff — I have families, friends, students, dancers and parents who come to the studio to help us paint walls or lay down Marley floor at 10 p.m. because that’s the only time it could be done. I ask for help and try to say thank you as often and as genuinely as I can. Overcoming challenges is really just a matter of never giving up, never being afraid to ask for help and not allowing failure to even be an option.”

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I have a funny way of personally looking at financial success. If I can afford to get my nails done and take my dog to the groomer whenever I want, then I know that I am financially successful enough.

Obviously, there are more ways to measure success other than just the balance of your bank account. (thank goodness:) Recently we started compiling more complete KPI data and discovered that we are doing quite well, statistically speaking, at generating leads and then converting them into sales.

The best way to assess our success is to see all of the sweat kissed, flushed cheeks and smiling faces in the studios every day. This is undoubtedly the greatest reward and most relevant to feeling successful and accomplished!
