Today we’d like to introduce you to John Robson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us John. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was lucky enough to attend a high school in central Pennsylvania that offered several photography courses. This was in the mid 90’s before digital cameras and we learned to shoot with black and white film on manual format cameras, along with processing the film and developing prints in the darkroom. This interest led me to Philadelphia to study graphic design as well as continue taking photography classes. There I would spend hours at a time in the darkroom with the magical experience of watching prints come to life in the developing solution.
After moving to Fort Collins in 2012 the requests for me to take on freelance photography jobs increased and started to outweigh my graphic design work. After several years of consistent photography work, I decided to focus on what my freelance clients really wanted and quit my full-time graphic design job. Over the years, my photographs have shown in galleries, publications and international websites.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have always had a hard time expressing myself verbally. Through photography, I have been able to capture what I want to communicate and put my voice into the photograph.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I set out to tell stories, through my eyes, of makers and shakers that put their heart into their work. I am mostly known for photographing culinary artists and the food industry. I love to capture the people and process that goes into the food we consume, from farmers and ranchers to the preparation and final stylings of culinary artists.
The story of our food is not only about the nicely plated meal that is set in front of us at a restaurant, there is the hard work, passion and art behind it. It involves complex issues of health, life and death that can sometimes be forgotten or unknown. My goal is to tell these stories so that they may provide value to the client and the consumer and to create some drool-worthy images in the process.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Producing work that captures the true essence of my clients that helps them show off who they are to the world and in turn creates value and improves their business. I am proud of the relationships I have built over the years and of every new relationship that is formed.
