Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Person.
Jordan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2010 I became really sick. I was living in my home state of Florida and recovering from surgery. I was on 13 prescribed pharmaceutical pills. I felt like I was dying. The only thing that made me feel better was cannabis. Each day as I felt more ill I made the decision to move to Colorado and become a medical marijuana patient. I left my dog, my car and my belongings behind in search of my health. I ended up having five more major surgeries over two and a half years. During that time I researched cannabis and plants for healing. I wanted to understand this plant that helped me so much. Over time I was able to come off of each pharmaceutical I had been prescribed thanks to cannabis.
When it was time to go back to work my body was not ready to be a nurse or massage therapist as I was licensed to do. I began volunteering for cannabis events and that led to a job at a medical marijuana dispensary. After a year of employment there in 2014 Colorado passed the recreational legalization of cannabis. I was ready to put my licenses back to work and I began to wonder what would happen if I applied cannabis from head to toe on a patient. My research began and I was quickly disappointed to discover there was no information to be found.
It all started like one big experiment. I started a spreadsheet and asked my patients questions and based on their feedback I began to form the modality of cannabis massage. Now over five years in business we have seen thousands of patients. I created a curriculum to assist fellow massage therapists to perform the modality to the best of their abilities. The class Cannabis Massage 101 has been taught to students in 23 states and three countries. The class is available online and in a group setting.
Not long after starting Primal Therapeutics in 2014 I began studying herbalism. I wanted my patients to have the most therapeutic effects possible when receiving treatments. I worked on the recipe for the massage oil for a couple of years before it was complete. I have now added five other products to the line. In the beginning of 2019, I launched Primal Healing CBD topicals for health and wellness.
My 20 plus years in wellness have earned me speaking opportunities at various events and conferences on the topics of cannabinoids, cannabis massage and more. Most recently I began contributing to two publications, GRAM and Cannabis MD. I never knew all those years ago when I became a nurse that I would have the opportunity to talk about cannabis plant medicine. I feel so blessed to be where I am right now.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been ups and downs. The most positive part of the whole experience of starting both companies has to be the patients and customers. The people that find us need a special type of healing. We have treated some of the rarest conditions because our patients trust us due to our background and the types of products we use.
The rocky road has come from me being too trusting. When I started both companies almost immediately I received an interest in a partnership. Both times I almost lost it all. Thanks to my intuition, my attorneys, and the people in my life that really care I was able to get out of both situations. I learned the hard way but I learned and that is what matters most.
The other major difficulty has been the lack of banking. I have lost credit card processing several times. I do not want to create a DBA to process credit cards. I want to use our business name and receive banking like the rest of the businesses that are not cannabis-related. The fact that the industry has been thriving for years and we still have no solution at the federal level is ridiculous.
Please tell us about your business.
Primal Therapeutics is a mobile cannabis massage and spa service. Since 2014 we have seen thousands of patients. We have done countless events providing chair massage and facials. We take the stress of driving after a relaxing treatment away by coming directly to our patient’s location. Primal Healing is our topicals line. Our products are chemical-free, cruelty-free, GMO-free and as organic as can possibly be. We use no preservatives or hard to process ingredients of any kind.
The evolution of Primal Therapeutics and all the knowledge gained has spread across the US and beyond. So I created a curriculum I called, Cannabis Massage 101. I attempted to have the class certified by several massage therapy organizations but due to the nature of the teaching, they refused. I have taught students from 23 states and three countries. The class is available online or in person. The more I teach fellow massage therapists and caregivers the more this can become a true healing modality.
For the last year, we have created an event series we are calling “In Bliss.” Each event is focused on the changing of the seasons and the different things our bodies need during that time. We pamper our guests with THC and CBD infused head to toe treatments, tasty libations and so much more all in a cannabis-friendly setting.
It is hard to pick one aspect of either company that I am most proud of. I guess I would have to say, teamwork. I truly have an incredible team. They work so hard and they are all so dedicated. They fill me with so much joy and so much gratitude. When I suffered a severe fall last year they all stepped up and took over in a way I could have only dreamed of. They allow me to focus on what I need to to continue the evolution of both businesses.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The first word that came to mind was determination. The cannabis industry is a hard industry to be a part of. It is far different from the medical field that I come from. The people that make up this industry are a result of this major melting pot of unique personalities and ideas. There are cliques and catty individuals that do their best to bring you down. The pure determination I have to succeed is what keeps me on my toes constantly. I am always in forward momentum and intend to stay that way. Competition is fierce and part of the game. If you are not determined to succeed then you won’t.
