Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlin Boyd.
Kaitlin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My interest in psychology began in high school where I took a basic psychology class and became obsessed with understanding people. Throughout college, my favorite classes were ones that aimed to make sense of the human experience–existentialism, human behavior, social psychology, etc. At the same time, I was introduced to yoga and mindfulness. These practices shifted my own mental health for the better, and I became passionate about sharing this experience with other people struggling with things like sadness and worry.
After college, I enrolled in a graduate program for social work. I learned more about clinical psychology–basically, how to help people improve their mental health–and I also learned about how our environment–including political and cultural norms–impacts mental health behind the scenes. Mashing all of my experience up to this point together, my goal was to help people from a holistic lens. I view holistic psychotherapy as therapy that incorporates the individual’s story as well as their environmental context, combines western and eastern interventions to promote mental well-being, and raises awareness of the mind-body-spirit connection and how this connection impacts mental health. I am grateful to be doing this work today–helping people change self-limiting thoughts and beliefs, increasing awareness and usefulness of the mind-body connection in finding emotional freedom, and creating a meaningful lifestyle informed by each individuals’ unique values.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest challenge I faced in starting the practice was overcoming limiting beliefs I encountered within the field of social work that promotes poor boundaries, self-respect, and self-care. I believe it is essential for therapists to take care of themselves first and help others second. We must practice what we preach, and that means setting appropriate boundaries around work/life balance, practicing ample self-care, and choosing career opportunities that pay a respectable salary/rate per session. From this place, we can effectively and ethically show up for and help others.
Please tell us about Discovering Peace Therapy.
Discovering Peace Therapy is a holistic psychotherapy practice serving teens and young adults in Denver dealing with depression. I combine concrete skill-building with mindfulness-based healing to help clients find emotional freedom, express their authentic self both individually and in relationship, and create a meaningful lifestyle informed by their unique values. This approach targets the core of depression–unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, limiting interpersonal patterns, and existential meaninglessness–to promote lasting change. My sessions value humor, honesty, humanness, and hope. I view the client-therapist relationship as collaborative, in which clients ultimately hold the answers to their own questions about how to heal and thrive.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have learned more about marketing before starting the practice!
