Meet KDJ Above

Today we’d like to introduce you to KDJ Above.

KDJ, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got involved with music at an early age. In elementary, I started playing the tenor saxophone. Later on, I was introduced to African percussion through a martial arts program I was in called Moyo Nguvu. I also spent a few summers during my youth attending jazz camp which helped me develop an even greater love for music.

In high school, I wanted to focus more on the percussion side so I enrolled in the marching band and played the quad drums for a year. During my senior year, I was cut from my basketball team, sports took up a lot of my free time so once I didn’t need to go to practice anymore I ended up choosing a new hobby that included two turntables and a mixer. These pieces became my new instruments. Watching BET’s ‘Rap City The Basement’ every day after school, I picked up on a few DJ skills and techniques. I also met some established underground DJs in the hip hop scene through a good friend of mine who’s name was Kevin Deon Johnson. He passed away in 2001, to keep his spirit alive I choose his initials for my official DJ name, KDJ Above. The rest is history.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Any and all challenges I came across made me better and who I am today. Once I finally understood what I wanted to do and how to do it the road became a lot smoother.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
KDJ Above is an Indie DJ and music performer. I have an ear for what sounds good and I take inspiration from a wide variety of music genres, sampling everything afrobeat, jazz, hip hop, funk, disco, house plus more. My one of kind performances and releases absorb listeners with an unmatched emotional intensity which I feel separates me from others.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
To continue to learn and grow more and expand my brand. I’m looking forward to putting on unique events and eventually headlining my own show. Performing in other countries is on my bucket list as well.
