Meet Kyle Ross

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Ross.

Kyle, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always had an interest in artistic endeavors. I entered an amateur photography contest when I was 13. Despite being devastated, I didn’t win the grand prize (against plenty of adults), I loved the whole process. Graduating high school, I won a small art scholarship as an award for my entries. After graduating from college, my Grandfather gifted me his film camera that he bought in Vietnam. I worked to get it in full working condition and that was it. Once I did, it was the linchpin to cement me into the photography world.

Now I am a landscape photographer, who also odd jobs as a various-other-types-of-photography kind of guy—driving all over the country trying to capture nature the way I see it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t say I have had some severe struggles, but the hardest part of it all has been getting my name out there, I’ve had plenty of times through my life where someone has told me my art was insufficient or is not what someone is looking for. That is never easy. It hurts. But it either pushes you to quit or pushes you to keep going.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I do all sorts of photography. I have shot weddings, portraits, music shows, family photos, you name it. That being said, my passion is landscape photography. I can’t get enough of trying to do good by the earth and show it off to everyone. I am enamored with nature and getting outside. and in that, its the little bit of struggle you have to do sometimes to push into finding the shot you’ve been looking for.

I love plotting out some extensive excursion to get a very specific shot. I’ll have maps of the atmospheric report with maps of light pollution and I’ll drive out hours to get in the middle of the darkest night sky I can find. I’ll stand in the middle of some spooky park at midnight because it got the best view of the moon, and I want to shoot pictures through my telescope. I love nature, and I am a firm believer that exposing everyone to nature more can help propagate awareness and appreciation of the earth.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Honestly, still the most proud moment was the first time someone wanted to *buy* a print from me. It’s a bit silly, but the idea that I created something that someone else wanted to spend money on was priceless. And its a feeling no one can take away from me. unless they return it to me, I suppose haha.
