Meet Kirsty York of Blackbird Ink in Lafayette

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirsty York.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kirsty. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Owner of Blackbird Ink tattoo shop. Being a young female artist the tattoo industry is not exactly welcoming.
After years of working under not the nicest of male bosses, at shops with ridiculous rules and hours.

I was driven to open my own shop to break the tattoo industry norm. My shop is a clam welcoming environment in contrast to the average grungy heavy meal playing tattoo shop. Most of my clientele are young females who are too intimidated to go into other shops. My artists and I are really trying to change the way the tattoo industry is viewed.

Although above all else, my main focus is the artwork. With an art school background, the artwork always comes first.

I strive to create better and better pieces of every tattoo. Tattoos are no longer your classic “mom” and “anchor” tattoos but are now becoming more like paintings on skin.

Has it been a smooth road?
The hardest parts were definitely working at other tattoo shops before owning my own. I was treated poorly because I was the only female at the shop and also treated poorly for being the youngest artist as well. Tattoo shops filled with drama and honestly threatening situations. being forced to stay that the shop from noon to midnight even though I was technically an independent contractor. All of this was a great lesson in what not to do as a tattoo shop owner.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Blackbird Ink – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Blackbird Ink is a clam welcoming tattoo shop. Different from your usual intimidating tattoo shop. As an artist, I specialize in mostly nature tattoos, flowers, animals, etc. But we tattoo a little bit of everything at Blackbird Ink.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
Lafayette is a very quaint city right next to Boulder. It is a small city with great mountain views. It defiantly complements our clam tattoo shop atmosphere.
