Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Funk.
Hi Laura, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started blogging 14 years ago when I was a young mom who was constantly oversharing and just needed a space to keep memories, photos and stories for myself. I ended up writing a post about Huggies that wasn’t exactly in their favor and they reached out and wanted to rectify my experience which is what truly kicked off the content creation that I do today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. Content creation is a constant pivot and learning experience. It also take a lot of time and energy. In the early days, I was so eager to make the brand connections that I was working myself to death. Often sleeping like 3-4 hours a day. It took its toll on me, on my marriage and on my kids and finally I had to take a step back and realize that this is supposed to be my outlet, something I enjoy and a way for me to help other parents, without costing me everything that I love. I still work about 20 hours a week, but I also outsource some of the jobs that I cannot keep up on like website maintenance to awesome people.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In 2011 I wrote my very first post for We Got the Funk. This blog is a play on our last name and was always intended to just focus on our growing family. We Got the Funk now sees millions of people a year come to our site to learn about hyperlocal Colorado events, recipes, crafts, family travel and more. It is a way for us to share our story and our lives while educating and providing resources for others. I think what sets us apart from other content creators in the city is our longevity as well as our storytelling. We have always just focused on our family, our experiences and hope that others will be inspired to create those memories too and at the core, that is what I am so proud of.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
COVID was hard on everyone. My full time job is a high school science teacher and at the time I had a 2nd and 5th grader. Imagine trying to educate everyone else’s children in an environment that was new to nearly everyone while also trying to teach your own kids as the world argued over what was best for my job, my children and my chosen field. It was easily one of the most trying times in my life where I truly felt like people did not value teachers, science or children and my faith in this world was crushed. However, I couldn’t just stop being online and ignore it. I had a business to run and I still wanted to give families hope, ideas and resources so I pushed through. I think for me the lesson that I learned from Covid is that attitude is everything and there is always space in this world for positivity, hope and love.
