Meet Cory Rowe of 5280 Film Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Rowe.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Cory. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I got my start in film when I was 15 years old, my cousin, Josh, took me to one of his friends movie’s that was playing in a local movie theater where we grew up. I walked into the lobby and there were over 100 people there to see his movie. I saw people talking, buying popcorn and snacks, and getting excited to see the movie. We walked into the theater and the place was packed. We sat down and watched the movie.

There were parts where the audience laughed and parts that made you think. It was the audience interaction I had that made me want to give it a whirl. I went home that night, more encouraged than ever and wrote my first feature length script. It was difficult to write a script at 15, let alone a feature. Looking back, I have learned a lot about screenwriting since then.

I’ve never been good at drawing, or at painting, or anything that was hands-on art. But with film, I was able to create a story and use my imagination to its full extent to make something that I would call art. There were points where I walked away from film, but I kept getting drawn back to it. From this point forward, I’m stuck with film and film is stuck with me.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is not smooth in this industry. There were times I felt discouraged by friends and family saying things like “this isn’t a real job” or “you can’t make money off making movies.” It was a tough pill to swallow. No matter how many times that I tried to back out of film, it creeps its way back into my life with a vengeance. With more meaning.

There are times where I felt that I wasn’t that good at it. I wasn’t getting accepted at festivals and didn’t understand why. As I matured, I learned that it wasn’t just about me. It’s about the audience. As the director of the film, I have adopted the term advocate. I am the advocate for the audience.

No matter the industry, there will be struggles. That’s how we grow. We learn from our mistakes to pave the way that makes it smoother, but with speed bumps.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about 5280 Film Company, LLC – what should we know?
I’m the very proud owner of 5280 Film Company, LLC. We strive to make high-quality films that connects audiences to enriched stories. With the help of some key players (Timothy Lee and Mikayla Roberts), the company has been able to produce some astounding product.

What sets us apart is that we care about the actors, actresses, crew, and the audience. We want what’s best for everyone involved. We don’t take every script, but we do take authentic and emotionally-driven stories that speak to the human heart.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being open, honest, and adaptable draws in success. I won’t get every shot that I want, but I compromise and get what’s needed to push the story forward. I listen to ideas that people may have. I need to have the audiences best interest at heart. If the idea that is presented seems plausible and would go well with the story, then we will get the shot.

I listen to what my cast and crew need. I ask what their dreams are and how to help achieve them. My dream is to direct movies while someone may want to be an actress. Knowing what they are most passionate about (including their ideal role) helps bring the connection between director and actress. This includes every role on set.
