What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?

Every industry has its myths—stories insiders repeat until they sound like truth. But behind the slogans and the spin are unspoken (and sometimes unnoticed) realities – we asked some of the wisest folks we know to share what lies they’ve noticed in their industries.

“Sell a million books.” No. Write because you cannot help it. Write because fervor is an excellent word and it needs to be described. Write (or create) because it is healing. I’m not sure I’d call it a lie, but I think one of the biggest misconceptions in the massage industry is how underutilized our work is in medical and long-term care settings. The biggest lie in the coaching industry is that visibility automatically equals clients. New coaches are told to post nonstop, dance on TikTok, or “just run ads.” That’s a stage-mismatch.
