Conversations with the Inspiring Marcy Kennedy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcy Kennedy.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started in 1994 with a local floral chain as a sales representative. I worked my way into design and then management for this company. Then, I moved onto working for a large hotel in downtown Denver where I managed and designed large events, weddings and everyday designs for the hotel. After being in the corporate scene, I went back to designing full time with a boutique flower shop and stayed there for many years. After starting a family and wanting to be closer to home, I started my own business where I have successfully been on my own for three years.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No! Things don’t always go smoothly. This though is where we learn the most. Don’t get discouraged by obstacles. Look at them as opportunities. A lesson you will and can grow from. When starting out, you may feel as you won’t fit in or how am I going to stand out from everyone else in my field. No one is you but you. What do you provide that will stand out from others? Your talent is yours and nobody else’s. People will be drawn to you for what you provide… you!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Flowers By Sweet Pea Designs story. Tell us more about the business.
I am the owner of Flowers By Sweet Pea Designs. We are inspired by and named our business after our 51′ Chevy Pickup “Sweet Pea.”
We recreate a feeling of times past and strive to bring perfection to memories of the future.
Flowers by Sweet Pea Designs is a local, family-owned and full-service florist. Our mission is to provide fresh
and innovative designs making the floral experience and final result everything the customer imagined.
Over 20 years of training and experience provide contemporary, quality and high-end design for any occasion large or small.
Our design professional was awarded the FAR Bridal Bouquet Master Design Award for Colorado two years in a row. We look forward to helping you create your floral vision!

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I’m always looking for new ways to stay up to date on trends. That may include taking local design classes, taking webinars or subscribing to local wedding magazines that showcase what local florists are providing their brides. Trends in our business are always changing. It is important to stay up to date and be able to offer your couples exactly what they are looking for.
