Today we’d like to introduce you to William Duncan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us William. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been a musician all of my life. Usually, when you tell someone you are a musician they have a look of either pity or something close to it. This reaction probably has to do with the fact that musicians struggle to make a living with their art despite being talented or driven.
I have lived all over the country writing and performing my music and the music of my colleagues. I love it and will never stop. But, making a living with the art form is the tricky part and it is also the least fun. After my time in New York City, I realized that I may be on my own. So my wife and I started a music publishing company based in Idaho Springs, Colorado.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The business is new and we have many more struggles to come. But, hopefully I can guide other young musicians in the right direction and can help them avoid making the same mistakes I did.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Bot Pop Publishing story. Tell us more about the business.
It’s a grab bag. We write, record, produce and publish music. We are not a label. On the production side we can provide pro bono work for a handful of artists a year. This means we will assist in giving them a leg up with their recordings and getting them into the right hands. We have a fully functioning studio on a mountaintop where art and the creation of art is quite a joy. We deal with getting music HEARD! We are advocates of the underdog who needs a voice in an industry of noise and confusion.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
This is an interesting question. I have had both bad and good luck and maybe the bad luck got me where I am just as much as the good kept me going toward something I truly believe in.
