Meet Kim Le and Scott Nguyen of Cakes by Skim in Denver Metro Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Le and Scott Nguyen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We are Scott & Kim and we created Cakes by Skim! We are a couple who were both born and raised in Denver. We both love food and everything food. I love to cook and Scott loves to eat.

Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, we feel really fortunate so far since the launch of our business. Because of the insurmountable support from friends, family and customers, we were able to gain exposure through social media in the Denver community, which has really kept us busy ever since. When we started, we would be lying if we didn’t say we weren’t overwhelmed with the unexpected demand for Spring Fling cupcakes. Starting a business during quarantine is challenging. For us, getting supplies were challenging, as we had to navigate through store closures. A different challenge we face now has been adjusting our work schedules now that we are back at work. Truthfully, we love the challenges we faced and happy we were able to learn from it. Most importantly, we just love making people happy through our sweet creations.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Cakes by Skim story. Tell us more about the business.
Twenty-twenty will definitely be a year to remember. When the stay-at-home order was put into effect in March, over 80 million Americans were forced out of work during a global pandemic. Unfortunately, we both lost our jobs as many businesses were forced to shut down and for some, permanent closures.

If you told us that we would come out of quarantine as business owners, we would have never believed it. It all started when we heard the news that the infamous Market in downtown Denver was closing its doors permanently. That was our favorite bakery to satisfy our Spring Fling craving, so we are so sad to hear the news of their closing. Soon after, we were really craving the Spring Fling cake and decided to try making our version of Spring Fling cupcakes. I decided to test it out. To our surprise, they were delicious. We decided to share some with our friends and family, and they loved them.

I am the one who started baking and Scott had the business aspiration to turn this hobby into a small business venture for us. From what started off as a fun hobby has really turned into a full-time job for us at home. The best part about it is that it doesn’t even feel like a job. While we started off baking cupcakes, we quickly had to dive into the world of cakes. We have a lot of fun collaborating with our clients to create the perfect cake for them. What we love about this business is that it gives us the ability to express our creative ideas into baked goods. We never intended to turn this into a business. It kind of just happened and we haven’t looked back ever since.

Being a small business, we are most proud of the growth we’ve experienced. We are truly thankful for all our friends, family and customers who continue to support us. We wouldn’t be here doing what we do if it weren’t for them. We are constantly looking for ways to improve and hopefully that sets us apart from others. The thing that keeps us motivated is the positive feedback from our community. We really enjoy the relationships we’ve been able to build with our clients.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We believe the baking industry is going to continue to grow in the coming years. In the past five years, this industry has seen an average growth of 1.9% per year with the exception of 2020. As bakeries and businesses began to reopen, we are going to see a gradual recovery in the next five years. It’s a business that will always have demand and supported by constant new trends. As long as we consistently look for ways to improve and stay up to date, we feel confident about the future of the Baking Industry.
