Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Danelle Wesley.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Wesley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I received my first chiropractic adjustment when I was only seven years old. I woke up one morning, after a normal day of being a country kid and playing outside, but was unable to get out of bed. I couldn’t get my body to cooperate and quickly determined I could only wiggle my fingers and toes. My parents, just as frightened as I was, sprung into action calling our local small-town physician.
With the physician unable to see me, my parents decided to take an alternative course of action. They found the number for our local chiropractor who was able to see me that afternoon. At that point in time, no one in my family went to chiropractors or even knew what they did exactly. Using TV trays to slide underneath me like a stretcher, they carried me to the backseat of the car and drove me into town. After completing a thorough history and examination, the doctor explained that he was going to “adjust my spine” and that it would “sound a lot like popcorn.” I’m seven years old so the thought of popcorn sounds delicious and exciting. The doctor did a great job and made me feel comfortable as he adjusted my spine. By the end of the appointment, I was able to walk out of the clinic and resume the life of a normal seven years old.
To this day, I’ve not had a recurrence of this condition. I did however become a regular chiropractic patient after that initial visit. Aside from that physical anomaly, I’ve suffered from chronic migraine headaches, neck pain, and back pain since I was a child. There would be times where even one flickering candle in the dark was too intense for my migraines. Through regular chiropractic care, dietary and lifestyle modifications, I’ve been able to significantly reduce the frequency of migraine episodes and am aware of potential triggers. Little did I know that the belief and passion for chiropractic was already flowing through my veins. My high school chiropractor was a great mentor and encouraged me to follow my intuition. As I pursued my undergraduate Bachelor of Science, I began to indulge in the art of alternative medicine. This leads me to continue my graduate education and study to achieve my Doctorate of Chiropractic…and the rest is history.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
By no means has it been smooth, but each bump in the road offers a learning opportunity. Graduate school teaches us to become amazing and highly qualified doctors, but we’re not given much preparation to become business owners. I had been working with chiropractors as an assistant and front desk since I since started undergraduate school so I had a lot of exposure to the good and bad sides of practice and ownership. Some doctors have been role models (shout out to 50th & France Chiropractic in Edina, MN) while others have been disappointing. My first “real job” in Littleton, CO was almost perfect on paper.
Unfortunately, the reality of it turned out to be extremely unprofessional. I ended up in the emergency room with a completely locked and immobile neck due to stress, and that was my breaking point. When I made the decision to leave that job with adequate notice, I was greeted in the parking lot at my next shift and told “my services were no longer needed.” Meanwhile, I had a full schedule of patients expecting to see me that day. I went into the office, collected my things and left. I was never given the chance to say goodbye or explain what was happening to my patients. Even though it was out of my control, I felt like I’d abandoned those patients. So if you’re reading this now, know I miss you & haven’t forgotten about you! However, each story has a silver lining. I’m extremely grateful for all the personal and professional relationships I’ve gained and still have since working there.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
I have experience working with people of all ages, from 4 days old to 90+ years old, but I have a passion for working with athletes of all calibers and all sports. I just want to keep people moving! I’m well-practiced in correcting and eliminating neck pain, headaches/migraines, upper back pain, lower back pain, as well as extremity pain and dysfunction. I proudly claim that “I’m not your average crack and go chiropractor.” I specialize in manual muscle release therapy, as well as instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM). I work to correct spinal imbalances directly through manual spinal manipulation (adjustments), as well as indirectly through specific muscular release and re-education. I love using various physiotherapy modalities, kinesiology taping, cupping techniques, etc. throughout my sessions in combination with soft tissue work and adjustments.
My adjustments are both “gentle and effective” and are thoroughly explained for patient consent and understanding. I even have some patients that I don’t adjust, we just work soft tissue and muscular re-education. A critical belief of mine is that adjustments are significantly more effective if the surrounding muscles are firing and relaxing appropriately. In order to gain the maximum results from each patient’s treatment, I work with very specific muscular movement patterns to address the causational factor(s) inhibiting proper function. I provide exceptional patient education and home exercise therapy to develop individualized routines and reduce the risk of injury.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m always looking forward to helping & educating more people about the benefits of chiropractic care. I love first-time chiropractic patients or those that may have had a bad experience historically. I would love to expand my practice and create a learning/teaching facility for new doctors to help bridge that gap coming out of school and being new to practice. We’re in such a powerful position to help people, and I’d like to see our profession recognized for all of its benefits & successes.
