An Inspired Chat with Gina Gibbons of Boulder

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Gina Gibbons. Check out our conversation below.

Gina, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Who are you learning from right now?
I’m learning from other DJs constantly, especially ones that have been in the game for decades. One in particular would be my partner Jay Dodge, who I learn from just by osmosis and witnessing some aspects of his creative process. He’s a big teacher and inspiration for me.

There’s also so many incredible DJ mixes online, I love putting one on at home to just enjoy and as I listen, I know I’m also learning.

Another place I learn every time is on the dancefloor. I love going out to dance and know that every time I experience another DJ, I learn from being part of the crowd.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Gina and I’m a house & techno DJ based in Denver and Boulder, Colorado that goes by the name Queen of Air.

I’m deeply inspired by my love of underground dance music. Starting off as a dancer, I blend my decades of experience on the dance floor with my own unique and intuitive way of mixing behind the decks.

My sound is often described as ‘ethereal’ and ‘uplifting’. I typically incorporate warm, elegant house music with playful remixes and dance-floor classics along with a deeper, hypnotic blend of techno and everything in between.

In addition to DJing, my partner and I throw parties in the Rocky Mountain foothills that have become regular gathering places for dancers and lovers of house & techno. These parties are what inspired the inception of our company Aram Sound.

Aram Sound, is a sound company that provides quality music and audio experiences within the Front Range. We provide sound for a variety of events including raves, public & private parties, retail environments, weddings, corporate events and more. We offer a scalable system that can cover anywhere from 50 to 500 people. We love providing quality sound and music for folks that appreciate it!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
The word “powerful” has definitely evolved over the course of my life but one moment that stands out, of course there were other moments before this, but an especially memorable moment was singing “Tainted Love” (Soft Cell version –with back up dancers(!)) in front of my high school, along with their parents, wearing an 80’s black body con dress and leather go-go boots. I remember locking eyes with the parent’s of my boyfriend at the time and just feeling like, “Yeah, this is me…”

Of course, it was also hilarious and totally cringe looking back, but in the moment I felt free and fearless in my expression which is something I still admire to this day.

Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
I miss the family and friends in my life that have passed away. One in particular, left way too young, but his presence has been a guiding force in my life even since he died. We both shared a deep love for music and he lives on in that way, I find that music is a beautiful way of connecting and softening the grief I have around those who have departed.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That you need a big social media following to have and maintain success. I suppose it depends on what your version of success is, of course. For me, I’d take a smaller crowd with an intimate and genuine experience over a big-budget, highly produced ‘show’ any day. The connection is so much deeper and that’s what matters the most to me.

Another lie is age. When it comes to DJing, the more you do it…the better you become, so an older age actually becomes an asset.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
Outside in nature especially near water, dancing in front of a well-tuned sound system or sipping a beautiful tea in the morning sunlight.
