We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kym Terribile. Check out our conversation below.
Kym, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, things at work and in my business have been moving quickly. I recently opened my first retail store and hired a team—growth I hadn’t anticipated happening so soon. With that growth has come new stresses and time commitments, so taking care of myself and managing my time has become even more important.
One thing that has brought me immense joy over the past few months is something simple yet surprisingly powerful: jumping on my mini trampoline. I keep it on my sun porch, and almost every morning after coffee, I make it a priority to jump for 30 minutes. I put on my favorite music, and it instantly puts me in a state of joy and playfulness. It helps me feel grounded, regulated, and lighthearted during a season that could otherwise feel overwhelming.
It’s become a daily ritual that reminds me that joy doesn’t have to be complicated; it can be as simple as making space for play.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kym Terribile, and I’m the founder and maker behind Wax Crescent, a luxury candle company based in Longmont, Colorado. I create small-batch soy candles that are inspired by memories, experiences, and meaningful moments, each paired with an affirmation to bring a sense of intention and connection into people’s homes.
What makes Wax Crescent unique is the storytelling woven into every scent. Many of my candles are inspired by family traditions, travels, or personal memories—like my Pistachio & Lemon candle, which comes from my great aunt’s cake that was served at every holiday. I love that scent has the power to unlock emotions and transport us back to cherished moments, and I build my collections around that idea.
This year has been especially exciting because I recently opened my first retail store and studio, which not only gives people a place to shop but also allows them to see the candle-making process and even join workshops. It’s been rapid growth, but also a dream come true—to create not just candles, but an experience that connects people to memory, story, and light.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who has taught me the most about work is my mother. Watching her go back to school in her 40s—while raising five kids and working full time—was one of the most powerful examples of resilience I’ve ever seen. She started with her associate’s degree and worked all the way up to her master’s, becoming the first woman in her family to attend and graduate from college.
I’m so proud of her. She managed to care for us while putting immense effort into changing her own life and creating a better future for herself and her children. From her, I learned that hard work and dedication can completely transform your path, and that while growth is not always easy, it is always worth it.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: Honor your light. Stay on your path. What lights you up is the spark you’re meant to follow.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say that what really matters to me are honor, integrity, and clear communication. Those values guide how I show up in my relationships and in my work.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I think my customers would miss the connection most. I’ve built such beautiful relationships with so many of them over the years. Wax Crescent began as a farmers market brand, and I spent weekends selling candles face-to-face. Some of those early customers are still with me today—we’ve grown alongside each other, sharing stories and witnessing life changes together.
I think they’d miss those meaningful moments we’ve created, the friendships that formed, and of course… the best-smelling candles ever!
