Check Out Andre DuBose’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andre DuBose

Andre, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was introduced to music in elementary school when I started to learn percussion. Throughout my academic life, my musical interests grew through the marching band. I went to IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) to study music, where I found out that I enjoy performing and want to make a career. After school, I moved across the country to Lake Havasu, Arizona with my wife, where we both started playing in a band named “Kevin Jaxon and the Midnight Sun.” We were considered the “youngsters” being fresh out of school and everyone else being at least 15 years older than us. We played various venues and casinos and, after a few years, moved to Denver, where my wife got a job as an elementary music teacher. My first band in Denver was called “Moonlight Bloom,” a 70’s style psychedelic rock trio featuring guitar bass and drums. We played various venues around Denver and even went on a few tours. They are still putting out music, but we parted ways at the end of 2018 so I could try other opportunities. I then met Miles Lee Guzman, a harmonica player/guitarist/vocalist of Miles Lee Band, a band that plays a little bit of everything. I still gig with Miles today. Later on I also joined the jam band “Tula” for a year. I had fun learning and playing in the jam band style, but I knew that I wanted to pursue my own project in the jazz/hip-hop/boom-bap style. After parting ways with Tula, I started to write music for my own project. I needed to find an MC name, so I went to a Wu-Tang name generator online…much like Childish Gambino. The first name that popped up was Quiet Warlock. It seemed perfect, considering some of the artists I look up to all have MC names starting with the letter Q (Q-tip & Questlove). I started out releasing a single called “Primetime,” just to some friends and family on SoundCloud. And I’ve been trying to grow it from there, releasing a short EP in November and more coming soon on the way.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’d have to say that all of the struggles along the way are internal obstacles: – Believing in myself and following my own path – Keeping the drive going, finding your spark – Knowing when to say yes or no to an opportunity – Positively navigating different personalities throughout the scene – Staying focused on self-created goals.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known as Quiet Warlock! The invocations of Quiet Warlock derive from the power of Hip-Hop and have the power to invoke the most powerful of nods and hip movement. Other magical beings that currently inspire me are J. Dilla, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Anderson .paak, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole. I am proud of the development and balance of my beat making, rhyming, and live performance. Trying to find my own unique style with a blend of all of my influences. I am at the beginning of my growth as a new artist and only have myself blocking what I want to accomplish. Live performances will set me apart from others. I plan to implement hip-hop, jazz, and electronic improv to style the songs differently in each show. I am drumming while singing/rhyming/rapping while also utilizing electronic sounds and sequencing, which will set the live performances ahead of the rest.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t quite believe in luck. Karma, yes. Being prepared for each situation usually results in the proper outcome.
