Check Out August Garcia’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to August Garcia.

Hi August, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am an artist. I’ve been drawing and painting ever since I could hold a writing utensil. The middle school held the years of my new love for writing; short stories and poems are and were my focus. In high school, I was able to improve my drawing and painting skills as I learned how to use new materials and was introduced to digital art as well. Junior year, I was introduced to slam poetry and entered a district contest to perform in. Senior year, I was able to present some of my artwork in a small café in Denver that hosted many school art shows throughout the year. I started my Instagram page in the beginning of my high school career and have gotten to 91 followers. Currently, I am an unknown artist and writer who hopes to start an online shop, perform poetry, and publish a book or two. I hope to extend my art for the country to see.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been relatively smooth. The only bumps were the struggles of high school and personal problems that forced me to take unwanted breaks from art. The toughest part has been ever since I started college in 2019. I was either doing homework or I wasn’t home; creativity took a halt. I’m currently taking a year off and working full time so the bumpy road is motivation and energy to create art consistently and it’s something I’m still working on.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a visual artist and writer. My specialty lies in acrylic and oil painting and digital art. Slam poetry is where my writing is at its best. I’m mostly known for my digital art since it is what I do mostly. I don’t have many accomplishments but I am very proud in the very few I have. In writing, I’ve had some poems published when I was younger and have performed some of my poetry in both my high school and college. What I’m most proud of is my digital art. A local music group called The CoLo Project has used some of my pieces as cover art for some of their singles. My art and poetry consist of personal experiences. I like to use past events and strong emotions so that my artwork can hold a story dear to me but connect with anyone who sees it. For a while, I used my art as a diary and hoped that others who saw it could connect and feel like there is someone else who understands them. Emotions make a very unique and beautiful signature; it’s something I have noticed that has created my best work.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The only mentors and connections I have had are teachers and family. Teachers were able to help me and guide me. They pushed me out of my comfort zone so I could gain confidence in reaching out when I became older. My connections in spreading my artwork is in the family. I have a cousin who shares my artwork wherever they can and another cousin who is a part of The CoLo project; they have given me the chance to have another platform for my art to be seen.
