Check Out Autumn Burn’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Autumn Burn.

In the beginning… there were song ideas. The earth cooled, dinosaurs died, the monkeys came out of the trees and picked up a guitar. They broke some branches off some trees for drumsticks and bam – Autumn Burn was formed. Our goal is to save the race from destruction by our hypnotic grooves.

Matt Durnil – Drums
Mikus Shoemaker – Bass
Eric Romero – Vocals / Guitar

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hell no. Writing music from the heart is almost as difficult as evolution. Finding a balance between making ends meet while making time and space to be creative can be limiting. Pushing yourself to that next level not only with playing but also with getting better gear can make for a difficult road. It’s all about finding the best process to make the abstract into the tangible. ~Mikus

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I remember sitting outside my place on the lawn one fall years back. I was excited to complete the first attempt at song construction and part arrangement. I lived in this dingy apartment complex and did most of this in my bedroom, away from the chaos that was always going on where I lived. I would invite friends over to jam and at one point started rehearsing with a live drum kit in the living room. I cannot believe the neighbors let us jam in connected units, but I’m sure this was some of the less destructive behavior that went on in the complex. I think this gave us a free pass as long as we weren’t involved in the regular vehicle break-ins or drug deals that frequented the side of the complex next to the 7/11. I would test riffs out with the jam sessions and then take them to my computer with the first version of recording software I could get my hands on for PC. I remember being proud of the noise that I helped put into a format that other musicians vibed with. It was an incredible feeling. After finalizing a format to a song we still play today, I laid back on the lawn outside. The leaves all looked like they were burning as they fell. The day became a feeling and the feeling became a desire. The visuals of that day still scream Autumn Burn. The feeling of completion ignited a need to do this process over and over. It’s an addiction. We have evolved over the years in a way that would give younger me a great deal of excitement. I feel that we are unique in the way we construct songs to include elements of punk, rock, pop, metal, and other elements we like to experiment with. We’re proud to have played many hundreds of shows all over Colorado and beyond. At one point, we were signed to an indie label and produced two albums with the help of recording artist and producer Ahrue Luster. We have used 2020 as an opportunity to figure out this new music landscape where record labels are obsolete and intimate writing sessions are the medicine for a world without in-person live music. Although we played a few Denver shows recently before things closed up, we’re ready to play to a live audience again as soon as the safety of all is not in question. ~Eric

Any big plans?
This year has given us an opportunity to re-calibrate our creative process and our approach to releasing new music. Our biggest plan for the future is being more steady in releasing content frequently. In fact, we’ve taken a jump-start on this process through writing a few new tracks over a writing session at our studio this very weekend. We’re excited to challenge ourselves in the upcoming plan to share multiple releases in 2021 – which will be our most sonically diverse offering yet. ~Mikus

I want to improve upon our creative-flow and embracing new technology to empower us for recording. ~Matt
