Check Out Kathy Fisher’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Fisher.

Hi Kathy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I entered college as a painting major and quickly discovered that I’d have to make a living so I switched to studying graphic design. I was fortunate that it allowed me to take fine art classes alongside design classes. I have a degree in Commercial Art and have worked as an illustrator and designer, but my love for creating art simply for myself has never waned. I am influenced by modern shapes and patterns. I naturally fell into becoming a mixed media artist, I find inspiration everywhere and feel driven to mix printmaking, painting, digital art, and encaustic, which is painting with wax. I enjoy working in encaustic because of the fact that it’s so tactile, I’m always building up layers and adding shapes and carving areas away. This back and forth process is so appealing to me. It allows me to incorporate my printmaking and digital artwork within the layers. Most important to me is creating compositions that are harmonious in color, line and shape.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Finding time to get into my studio on a daily basis is probably my biggest challenge. Life gets in the way but I find that if I schedule time for myself, this allows me to freely create. Finding momentum in the Denver art scene is always a challenge but just getting yourself out there and getting into to shows is so satisfying as an artist, we need our work to be seen and to receive that feedback from the viewer. I enjoy meeting so many of the creative people in the Denver area.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in encaustic work which is working in wax. Encaustic has been a revelation, not only because of its historical use being translated by (or refreshed by) modern artists, but more because of the tactile nature of the medium. I feel as though I’ve found my unique voice within my artwork. People say that they are surprised by how I’m able to see the vision and build up through the many layers to the finished product. It takes time and practice for an artist to figure out their own unique way of working and I’m happy that I’ve discovered that. I enjoy working with unique color combinations and I consider myself a colorist.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Get out to the galleries and visit the monthly shows in the Denver area! The art scene is bursting with creativity, it’s all so inspiring and I’m truly grateful to be a part of it.
