Check Out Rhonda Curley’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhonda Curley.

Hi Rhonda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My hair has always been a negative topic of conversation for my family growing up, then through school, and even into adulthood. I never truly felt secure doing what others wanted me to do to my hair so in 2016 I big chopped my hair. Soon after I got my license for hairstyling and started learning about textured hair from multiple trained curl and texture specialists, specifically for the dry climate in Colorado. I began to find the love for my hair and that built the love I had for myself. I knew that my goal was to spread education of textured hair to people of all ethnicities and races, but what I found is the great joy that comes from helping people who have felt as frustrated as I have with their hair and other’s opinions contributing to that. I find myself empowering people through their hair to be their truest self and find the deepest self-love they can, I turn become more empowered myself. I learned about cutting, coloring, and styling all curly/textured hair for three years. I started my own business, Curls, Kinks & Coils LLC, in 2020 and I am so proud of all I have built so far and I am so excited to see how far I grow. I hope to spread education to everyone about textured hair, especially tightly curled, kinky, coily hair types. No one deserves to have a stylist attempt to do their hair, but to complete the service with knowledge and empower their client with each visit.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I was teased a ton by my family and people through school. I definitely lacked self-confidence and didn’t do well in school. I attended two different colleges in search of what I really wanted to do in life. My life took a standstill when I had my son and then my daughter 17 months later. When I attended hair school and finished, it was actually my second try at going. I decided to go back after getting separated and later going through a divorce from my children’s father. I was working full time at a job I hated I was extremely overwhelmed as a new single parent, while going through a divorce, it was as if all the hard times in life hit at once. In October 2016, I attempted suicide and was placed into a mental health facility. After that I knew I needed to take care of myself. I eventually quit my full time job, and with the support of my parents, I went to hair school full time. I finished with amazing grades and I understood everything so well. I knew the exact salon I wanted to work in after I got out of school. I ended working there and I was so excited I literally screamed in my car: I learned a lot of great things from the salon I worked in, but I never felt like I could be myself. I was told I should not wear my hair in an Afro, not to wear bright colors, sticking to simple black and white. I felt like a robot and I was only happy when I was deep in hair and talking with clients. I began having anxiety going to work, I knew it was unhealthy and it had to end. I got amazing education from multiple stylists that helped build the talent I have today. I thought I must be crazy to start a business in a pandemic, but the timing couldn’t have been better.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a texture specialist. I can cut, style, or color and texture of hair from loose/wavy to curly, to kinky. My passion is helping people of all races, genders, and ages to embrace their hair in in natural texture. I enjoy many no heat styles and protective styles. I give my clients the education they need to style their hair at home as well as the product regimen best for them. I love to help clients find the perfect color while keeping their curls/Kinks intact. I am proud of my client’s progress and how healthy their hair becomes. Many people say when they come to me they feel like they can talk about anything. I am very open about my life and I believe I am my truest self when I do hair. I think people can feel my authenticity and they know I truly care.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as doing what you love to do and making money from it. Not living paycheck to paycheck. Having all your bills paid, but still having enough to live an adventurous life. I’m a simple person, but I’d to love to travel with my family and give back to my community.’ I will be successful then but I feel successful now as well.
