Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Ladd.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. I’ve lived in Colorado for almost 25 years and I’m married to the wonderful Marion Ladd. I am an entrepreneur at heart. It’s in my blood. My father, my grandmother and her grandmother were all entrepreneurs. But, I started my professional career as an Aerospace engineer and continued in that field for 20 years including my college internships. In 2002, while still working in corporate, I started the DenverBlackPages.com and in 2005, added the non-profit arm of the business, Mountain Region Black Economic Summit (MRBES) Success Summit.
In 2007, I left corporate to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams full-time. So how did I end up being a mortgage loan originator? Always having had an interest in personal finance, in 2010 I took a position with a Financial Planner to learn the trade. I cut my teeth on insurance and annuity products, but what I enjoyed the most was the mortgage business.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The MRBES Success Summit was my biggest accomplishment and my biggest struggle. I am an introvert, so the DenverBlackPages Advisory Board’s idea to produce an economic empowerment conference for people of color terrified me because I knew that I would have to really put myself out there. I had been doing small networking events, but the MRBES Success Summit was a conference with speakers, and workshops, etc. In addition to creating a conference for over 500 guests, the main struggle was soliciting sponsorship funding from various sources. After 13 years of producing the conference, in 2018 I decided to shelf the event and focus on the mortgage business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a Certified Mortgage Advisor with NEXA Mortgage, LLC. As a Certified Mortgage Advisor, I take an educational approach to mortgage lending and I have access to over 125 well-known mortgage lenders and 1000+ products that allow me to provide my clients with the best mortgage for their needs/goals.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I have a B.S. in electrical engineering and an M.S. in Computer Science. I love playing Bid Whist and I hate shopping. My favorite outfit includes a baseball cap, jeans, tee-shirt and converse All-stars. 🙂
