Today we’d like to introduce you to Kisha Johnson.
Hi Kisha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am on a mission to help entrepreneurs create the business they’ve always dreamed of. I’ve been a bookkeeper for over 20 years, and really began to see a lot of discouragement from business owners who are trying so hard to grow, but feel like they are hitting a brick wall with too much work, and not enough resources. It always seems to be a lack of understanding about their finances, because they don’t know how to organize their books or use their software. They are unable to leave full time jobs to pursue their dreams, unable to pay themselves a salary, and unable to get out of debt. I knew there was a better way, and started my firm to help small business owners focus on what they love to do, growing their business.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Learning to be an owner, and create a culture of acceptance around money has been the biggest challenge for me. Finding the right clients, who fit into our business model and culture, and having to say goodbye to great business owners who weren’t a good fit has been hard. I’ve struggled with not charging enough money for our services, and standing firm on what is included within the scope of a project we are working on. A wise friend and mentor once told me, “Money isn’t complicated, it’s our relationship with it that is!”
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a full service bookkeeping firm who specializes in helping small business owners learn to pay themselves first, get out of debt, and create the work /life balance they’ve dreamed of. We seek to be an advocate and advisory firm – helping our clients with a 360 degree view of their business – not just their numbers. We partner with our clients to see them succeed in every area of their business, often recommending software solutions, podcasts, books or referrals to business coaches. Primarily we provide compliance in bookkeeping / accounting, payroll and sales tax. We also meet with our clients on a regularly scheduled basis to review their numbers and seek out ways to become either more efficient, or brainstorm ways to increase revenue. We are not a hands off organization, we truly believe in partnering with every one of our clients and knowing who they serve, what they provide, and how they help their clients.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Automation and AI (Artificial intelligence) is paving the way for more business owners to have easy access to their accounting. Apps and integrations offer quick solutions for business owners to work virtually, and in a remote environment. We seek to help the transition for these clients, with training on the best practices, the best software solutions, and the most efficient work flows possible. Virtual, remote bookkeeping firms are rising in popularity because of the ease of information sharing, the lower cost of services, and for small firms, not needing a full or part time accounting person on staff. On average a business owner can save 50-75% of the cost of a full time person by hiring a remote firm to help. The demand for advisory, or coaching / mentoring services in the area of finances is increasing every day. Gone are the days of an accountant or bookkeeper just spitting out numbers and facts and leaving the clients to try to figure it all out on their own. Clients want input and feedback on where their company is going – and how they can succeed.
