Community Highlights: Meet Meg Touborg of Denver Architecture Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Touborg.

Meg Touborg

Hi Meg, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Meg Touborg, and while I have lived and worked on both coasts, I am so happy to have settled in Denver. I was appointed President and CEO of the Denver Architecture Foundation (DAF) in January of 2024, and it is my privilege to invite others to explore and experience the many aspects of our unique built environment our vibrant city, just as I did (and am still doing.)

I am inspired for the possibilities for the Denver Architecture Foundation, weaving together experience and knowledge I gained from decades as an executive and entrepreneur in the worlds of architecture and design. I have served as a founder, a fundraiser, and a convener, among other roles. I think this is my best job yet!

Most recently, I was the development director of the University of Colorado Denver’s College of Architecture and Planning. Before that, I founded and led a boutique marketing agency in Los Angeles, specializing in business development for design-based businesses across the country. I also co-founded and co-directed the Leaders of Design Council, a national membership organization of top architects, landscape architects, and interior designers. Through these and other ventures across the country, I honed a first-hand understanding of how to lead and grow an organization fueled with as many creative ideas as possible.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a “yes, and” person, my ideas can sometimes run wild. Without clear goals and plans of action, attempting to operationalize the new and untried can be a real challenge. Another struggle is time management, as wearing many hats in a small organization with big plans makes it hard to prioritize! I remind myself “eyes on the prize” multiple times a week.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Denver Architecture Foundation’s mission: “Inspiring people to explore our dynamic city, experience the importance of design to our quality of life and envision an exceptional future for Denver.” We put this intention into action by organizing walking tours, hard hat tours of construction sites, youth education, lectures, and special events. Once a year we host the citywide, multi-day celebration for enthusiasts and practitioners called Doors Open Denver.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
When launching a new initiative, take the time to bring people with you. Explain your concept and outline your work plan. Ideas only get better when they are shared with, and shaped by, others at all levels of leadership. A corollary to this lesson is that it can be easy to have ideas, whereas the real magic and skill comes from figuring out how to get them accomplished!

Public speaking is not so scary when you love what you do and really care about your subject.

“Make your own luck!”

And … “Know when to fold ’em.”
