Tadeo Martinez

Hi Tadeo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey started in 2016 when I came across a Facebook ad about Shopify and the idea of running an online store. At 18 or 19, the concept was entirely new to me, but I was captivated. Without funds for courses, I taught myself through countless YouTube videos. A year later, without significant progress, I learned about SEO and reached out to SEO agencies, offering to work for free to gain experience. One agency took me in, and soon after, due to personal circumstances, I became financially independent. I lived on a minimal budget while learning and earning a small stipend.

After about a year and a half, I left to pursue my original dream of affiliate marketing, which didn’t work out. I pivoted to selling websites and cold-called businesses, eventually finding steady work on Upwork in 2019 with a marketing agency. By December 2019, I was making $4,000 a month—the most I had ever earned.

In early 2024, the company I worked for was sold, and since February, I’ve been working independently, managing website clients and expanding my network. Through masterminds led by John C. Maxwell, I’ve gained clarity on my vision, and I’m focusing on programming as my path forward. For the rest of 2024 and into 2025, I’m dedicated to implementing steps to pursue my new vision for my business and career.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

0:01 It has most definitely not been a smooth road. It’s actually been a very rocky road. Except for the five years that I was working with the One Marketing Agency from 2019 to 2024.
0:17 Beginning first month of 2024. That, I would say that that was a smooth road in the sense that I had stability.
0:25 I was working with a good team. and I will see you able to see the benefits of having financial stability and also time to be able to do, to start picking up on hobbies and, and extracurricular activities like hanging out with friends.
0:46 But, but in the whole, the whole timeline, the whole since nine year timeline, it’s, it’s It’s been a lot of struggles of figuring out how to, to do all the technical work, learning all of that.
1:04 It’s been a big learning curve, learning all the business, savvy, all the business skills that I need along with the technical skills of the job.
1:17 So it’s, it’s been a lot of learning. It’s been a lot of, of self-discovery. So it’s a short answer. It has not been a smooth road.
1:31 It’s still not a smooth road, but now, um, I have more skills. I have more programming skills. I have more development skills.
1:42 I have more IT skills. I have more design skills. So I have a lot more skills than when I started and I have a lot more experience in those technical skills, but also a lot more experience in the business sense.
2:01 To where, at least now I know, or I, I know what steps to start taking to, to reach the next level, if that makes sense.
2:14 But, but I guess to answer the question, uh, what were some of the struggles along the way? It was mostly, uh, I guess mostly it’s been finding, actually it’s been finding my passion and finding my base.
2:31 I’ve been working really hard on acquiring the skills, the technical skills, which I, I have acquired. Obviously I can always get better.
2:41 And I will always get better, keep improving. But, but that, that was mainly the struggle is, is being narrow focused thinking that all these technical skills are what, what are going to help me achieve my goal.
2:55 And now just, Just literally a few days ago realizing that that is not the time technical skills, but it’s also, I guess I don’t even know what to call it, but it’s also another component to the technical skills that are going to help me accomplish my, my goal.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor or building a network is vital for growth, and it takes persistence and strategy. My main advice is to reach out to many people in your industry. Keep in mind that while some may seem impressive at first due to their web presence or sales skills, they might not be the best fit for you personally. Look for mentors who are results-oriented and profit-driven but also take the time to genuinely know and support you. A good mentor should make you feel heard and valued, as this leads to the most productive relationships.

Networking takes effort. It’s not always the first person you meet who will become your mentor. Instead, attend networking events, reach out to your network, and ask for connections. Let people know what you’re looking to do and ask if they know anyone who can help.

If you’re considering courses or paying for mentorship, approach cautiously. Networking and word of mouth often yield more genuine results. Be clear about your goals and strengths so you can find someone aligned with what you want to achieve. It’s crucial to find someone you enjoy working with—mentors who challenge you are important, but not at the cost of your well-being. Don’t settle for a mentor who constantly puts you down or makes you feel inadequate.

Ultimately, you need a mentor who has good working standards, values empathy, and treats others respectfully. The journey may be tough, but with the right mentor, it becomes an empowering experience that fosters your growth.
