Conversations with Alisa Sauter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisa Sauter.

Hi Alisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello! My journey begins back in 2008, after recently graduating from Johnson & Wales University with a degree in Baking and Pastry and Food Marketing. My first job out of college was at a small boutique winery in Napa Valley as a tasting room representative, and it was such a fun experience meeting people from all over the world! Often times I would be able to pair featured wines with food/desserts for special events, and I found that I really loved the chance to be creative with different flavor profiles. That soon led to opportunities in both large and small bakeries on the East and West coast, where I was able to hone my skills and focus on cake design. I would occasionally take custom orders from friends and family on my time off, and I started to see that I enjoyed the personal connection/flexibility that it offered. In 2016 I took the business full-time, and even though it hasn’t always been easy it has been the most rewarding experience and am forever grateful for all the support from so many amazing people! I currently also teach classes as my side gig, another one of my passions!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not always been a smooth road, but I feel the challenges and struggles have made me so much stronger. As a business owner there is always the difficulty of managing a work/life balance and has always been tough for me. I often put so much of myself into my work because I want to offer the highest quality product possible while keeping my clients happy, but that can result in a lack of self-care and life balance. It’s something I am constantly working on, but I have to remind myself that in order to create I need the rest to refresh as well.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a small custom-order bakery specializing in cakes, decorated cookies, and assorted desserts. I am known for my attention to detail and ability to incorporate unique and personalized elements to each dessert. I think what sets me apart from other bakers is being able to use many inspirational details from the event/person to create something special and one of a kind.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
It’s not so much about luck. it’s more about dedication to your craft and finding that thing you are passionate about and sticking with it. With each opportunity comes experience and knowledge to make you a well-rounded person and a better business owner. It’s a constant process of learning, and making changes that are beneficial to both you and your clients.
