Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Golden.
Alex, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved music. When I was a kid I would create mixtapes from the radio and constantly be on Napster, but wasn’t until two friends gave me the push to DJ by booking me for a house music party that they were throwing. At that time I had thought about DJing because I had grown tired of the usual top 40 and open format scene in Aspen and wanted to make a change. They gave me the date of the event, and after buying a controller in Queens, watching countless YouTube videos and practicing nonstop for hours each day for about three months I was ready for my first gig. After that first set, lots of doors opened for me and I gained the confidence to really pursue my new passion. For me this has never felt like a job, it’s just an amazing exploration of how I can contribute to the artistic community in Aspen and push myself.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve been lucky with the overwhelming support system there is in Aspen among the young DJ community. We work together and it has helped us gain an immense foothold in the scene. I was once told by a bar manager in Aspen that I would never amount to anything in Aspen because I wasn’t playing “Aspen” music, which only made me more motivated to play things that were fresh, funky and unique. I decided after that the best thing I could possibly do is stay true to my own style and so far that has gotten me exactly where I want to be.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in house music, but I call myself a “Lifestyle DJ.” I play events ranging from clubs, bar takeovers, yoga classes, art openings, music festivals, apres parties, wedding after-parties (no weddings), I love to keep it new! I challenge myself with trying to make each set different, and constantly be introducing listeners to new tracks and genres. I want people to be getting down to tracks they’ve never heard and be excited about discovering something different! I do also love making mixes and have just started producing my own tracks.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Be true to yourself and identity no matter what anyone says. You will go farther and be happier than you can imagine.
