Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Kelly.
Alexandra, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was raised in a very strict, traditional Filipino household. I often found it difficult to be myself, and that difficulty manifested itself through me rebelling from high school through the point where I met my now-husband. We were only together for a short nine months before we got married and moved to Atlanta, Ga. It was then in the midst of trying to figure out what it meant to be a wife that I realized I wasn’t even sure who I was as a woman. I was 22, in a brand new city, and knew not a soul. I was lost. I wish I could say there was a magical Cinderella moment where I transformed into who I am today, but that would be a lie. The truth is that finding yourself takes time. In fact, you never really stop finding out new things about yourself. It’s in the everyday moments, the trials, the victories and everything in between that you find yourself. For me, after five years of moving around the country with my husband, moving back home to Colorado this past November, and giving birth to our first child in March, that I have realized how much I’ve changed as a woman and how strong I really am. I went from pursuing a career that would have me behind a computer screen, fueling my once shy personality, to becoming a broker associate and my own boss. It all started with taking a leap of faith and moving away from my hometown. I 100% believe that you cannot truly become your best, most authentic self until you leave your comfort zone.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been everything but smooth! Honestly, growing up half Filipino and Black was difficult in itself, as I always felt that I had to identify with one side or the other. I was raised to be timid and that timidness resulted in me confirming to how others thought I should act and what I should be, and thus created a lack of self-confidence. I wasted so much time on trying to please others, that I neglected my true self. Don’t do that to yourself, don’t waste your time, it’s so valuable. My advice to young women who are just starting out is to always take the risk. Whatever it is. Even if it’s as small as eating dinner at a restaurant alone, or switching majors, even moving to another city, TAKE THE RISK. It is in those vulnerable moments that you will find your true self and all the wonderful things you’re capable of.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a Broker Associate for Valor Realty Colorado and I love it! It was a huge risk leaving my 9-5 for a commission-based career, but there’s no better feeling than being your own boss. Helping others find/sell their home is a huge ordeal that requires a lot of trust. I pride myself on being transparent, honest, and loyal to those I work with. Being able to come back home to Colorado and help others with such a big part of their lives means a lot to me and is something I take very seriously. I’m here to build lifelong relationships.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Unfortunately, opportunities for women don’t always present themselves. When they do, oftentimes our own self-doubt or society telling us we’re ill-prepared, hinder us from taking the risk. I believe that women are capable of ANYTHING, and it’s so important that we stand together to not only highlight and encourage women to take those existing opportunities but to also create them for ourselves.
